Watched this recently; first time seeing the picture in its entirety in about 15 years. Perhaps I'm getting crankier in my old age but IMO the picture does evince a minor strain between, on the one hand, the primary narrative thrust (the murder trial; and to hear Sonny Seiler tell it in the supplements there were actually four trials) and, on the other, a desire to represent "local color." I agree that Chablis' scene at "the black people's ball" is not without its charms. But what does it have to do with the larger narrative, or even Chablis' role in it? It feels a bit to me like maybe Clint was titillated by something new-ish to him (?), drag culture, and included more of Chablis than he otherwise might have. Her primary ultimate goal as far as the narrative is concerned is to testify at trial and thereby besmirch Billy Hanson's reputation. But she's one step removed from Billy: She didn't date him ("much too trashy" -- LOL). She was simply roommates with Billy's GF, Corinne. So including so much of her is something of a stretch IMO, one which adds to the length of a film that was criticized for being about 2.5 hours long. (Having said that, given what a figure she was on the "Savannah scene," I imagine there would have been accusations of "whitewashing" had the Lady not had a palpable role in the story. I have not read Berendt's book. I recall one critic saying that 'just because Clint decided to make a movie of Berendt's novel doesn't mean he had to shoot the whole thing.') Still dig Paul Hipp ("Jim shot somebody. Canape?") and love kd's reading of "Skylark." Last edited by Paul.R.S; 10-13-2017 at 12:56 PM. |

Really good movie. Just watched for the first time. I loved so much about it... the score, the scenery, the acting. It really reminded me of Savannah, where you can still go and see horses trotting along to this day.
