UHD doesn't have higher bitrates when taking four times as many pixels, HDR and all that stuff into consideration.

It's not been officially solicited. All we have is this one image, which may be fake, so there's no solid answer yet.

If you do your research, most movies (anime and most in general) are finished at 2K resolution, thus they'd be upscaled for the UHD release. Granted, HDR would make the colours shine, but unless it was done at 4K (only cel animated and 1 modern- Gundam Thunderbolt), it wouldn't be worth it.

Just assume it doesn't. It would be too good to be true, right?

There's actually one more digital anime finished at 4K: Mamoru Nagano's GOTHICMADE. This is a quite weird case, the film first released in 2012 with the 2K DCP and it was a box office failure. Then it got a few rounds of re-releases in the following years with a newly made 4K DCP. It's said the animation is done in 4K and they don't have enough theaters to screen a 4K copy when it first came out, so they output a 2K DI. When it got re-release, they remastered the film and output a 4K DI. Although this film is still a box office failure after the re-releases and the reviews are not so positive. The film have no plans for any home video release even till now.

Hard to say. The most recent previous Shinkai film (Garden of Words) did have English subs on the JP BD, and was also released by Toho.

I think The Garden of Words blu-ray was made by CoMix Wave, Toho only work as a distributor, similar to Japanese blu-ray for Children Who Chase Lost Voices, which has English and Mandarin subtitles, was made by CoMix Wave and distributed by Media Factory. So if CoMix Wave still in charge of making the blu-ray for Your Name, I say it's possible to have multiple subtitles, but if Toho was in full charge of making this...

CoMix Wave was the publisher for the Japanese release of The Garden of Words, but they were not the publisher for Children Who Chase Lost Voices. Media Factory was.

Toho was the publisher for last year's short She & Her Cat -Everything Flows- that was made for CoMix Wave's Omnibus in the Ultra Super Anime Time block. It too had Japanese, English, and Chinese subtitles.

In short, there actually is a decent probability that this may have Japanese, English, and Chinese subtitles, but we won't know until the official solicitations are out. However, we also have to consider that Toho is selling this internationally as well. If they feel that putting English/Chinese subtitles on the Japanese home release will cause people to import that release and not support their local ones, they may decide to not do that this time to support the companies who bought the rights to the film.

I think they won't announce Your Name JP BD release as long as the film is showing in cinema in Japan. Though some theaters finished showing late April.

But it's been in theaters in Japan for 8 months or so. I think that's plenty of time. Now it's time to get the Blu-ray and DVD sales.

You can't compare those times to what we're used to in the west.

I think they're gonna try to milk it as much as they can. It must be disappointing for them to not have passed Frozen... And they were so close, about $6 million! The movie is no longer even on the top 16 charts! Yikes!

I really think they should have held off on the IMAX re-release and did it sometime later this year, instead of all the way back in January. But oh well.

I'm super happy that we finally have a release date for the BD, but come on, end of July is too far away!

I wonder what kind of versions Japan will have, I'm really excited! So far, I'm planning on getting the 4K UHD version. Might finally be the time to buy a UHD blu-ray Player. This movie was my #1 movie of 2016, so I'm def going all out.

I read somewhere that there's like a limited edition thing going on. I wonder what's going on.

This is the only source that I've found of it, but that doesn't mean it's not true either; just take it with a grain of salt.

If it is true, then it's being released in 4 versions:
  • Collectors' Edition: 12,000 yen. Includes movie on 2 discs (4K HD Blu-ray and likely Blu-ray) plus three bonus discs. Also includes 100 pg booklet, mini-character stickers, and something else I can't read. It'll come in a newly drawn digipak.
  • Special Edition: 7,800 yen. Includes movie on BD and two bonus discs. Includes the booklet and stickers. Also comes in a digipak, but likely just a key visual instead of being newly drawn.
  • Standard Edition Blu-ray: 4,800 yen. One BD and the stickers.
  • Standard Edition DVD: 3,800 yen. One DVD and the stickers.

If you pre-order early, you'll get a bonus film bookmark featuring scenes from the movie. (randomly assorted)

As someone who follows JP solicitations, this makes sense to me, so I'm initially inclined to believe it. I do have some doubt though since I can't confirm with any other first-hand source.
Another picture got revealed recently. Here's what it tells for the bonus contents:

- Director Makoto Shinkai Filmography (collection from previous Shinkai works)

Special Edition:

Bonus disc 1:
- Video Storyboards (Shinkai’s video storyboards for the film)
- Your Name making-of footage: A documentary covering the ~year long production

Bonus disc 2:
- Commentary from Ryunosuke Kamiki, Mone Kamishiraishi, and RADWIMPS about the recording/music performances.

Whelp, seeing those specs: That's clinched it. Collector's Edition or bust.

I'm a sucker for special features so this is a treat to see.

And here's my early projection for the contents of Funimation's BD eventual release:

Bonus features:
  • Dub commentary
  • Trailers
Look forward to it in 2018!

At least I don't have to worry about not having a Shinkai commentary track from FUNi, since apparently the film won't have one by him for its native release.
