Maybe join in the conversation about what is allowed while the voting is still going on instead of just complaining afterward. If you didn't have more input during the creation, then don't complain about the results.

Now we're talking. All great films, with the exception of Quigley Down Under.

Kinda sad to see Quigley so low. Was hoping it would be higher but at least it made it. I had it at #2 on my list. A good, fun movie all around.

Never thought of The Last of the Mohicans as a western. Great film, though.

It also probably borrows moreso from exploitation and De Palma than from westerns.
I agree with this point of view regarding Kill Bill and a few others that have been mentioned. When I think of westerns, a film like Kill Bill does not come to mind. That is my take, however, this could be a matter of individual taste in how different people identify the "western" genre in film. In my case, there are some films that, while clearly not periodically set in the American West of the 19th or very early 20th Century, I would argue fit completely and comfortably within the genre. The one that most comes to my mind is Bad Day at Black Rock. Set in the post WWII 1940's, this film is every bit as much a western as any other film that has been mentioned on this forum. Even its title screams western.

Additional point: I came to this forum late, after voting had been well under way so I did not have an opportunity to comment on my personal "definition" of the western film. Just stating point of view in response to the on going discussion.

I wonder if it's symptomatic more of people trying to pad out their lists, adding Kill Bill/Mohicans etc to try to get to 20 films when they can't think of any more westerns? Little bit annoying, but shouldn't affect the top twenty (hopefully).

what we're seeing now are movies that appeared on just a handful of lists but I wanted to include them and give some exposure to some of the less popular choices that might not get noticed otherwise.

looking at the top 25, I see just one movie that might get disputed. everything else fits "classic" western. also, our top 10 will each have 25 or more votes meaning they appeared on at least half of all the lists submitted.

This.

I also questioned The Last of the Mohicans at first, but then decided that it is a far more palatable choice than Kill Bill Vol. 2.

Back to the Future pt. 3 maybe? It's definitely more qualified to be on this list than Kill Bill or Last of the Mohicans.

*Edit: On second thought, No Country for Old Men has to be the one.

Could've put or named other 20 movies, but I'm convinced that The Last of the Mohicans is a proper western. Surely more than Back to the Future part III or Django Unchained (two random movies that I see listed many times).
Depends on how you define a western.
Something representing the struggle and the epic of the frontier (no matter where the frontier was located at that time) or people with a stetson shooting each other?

Indeed. There are a few titles mentioned in a lot of lists that will be discussed being a western or not. I could have added more standard westerns, but they were not good enough for an all time top 20 in my book. So I included the many acknowledged subgenres. I just kept in mind what was the most true one of it's kind and scored high on my personal rating scale. So, it was intentional. The case with lots of members, clearly.

I would say it's rather symptomatic mediocre classic westerns show up, because of the fact some haven't seen enough movies in the genre.

Although neither film is on my list, Django Unchained is categorically a western.

Quote:
The Western is a genre of various arts, such as comics, fiction, film, games, radio, and television which tell stories set primarily in the later half of the 19th century in the American Old West, often centering on the life of a nomadic cowboy or gunfighter[1] armed with a revolver and a rifle who rides a horse. Cowboys and gunslingers typically wear Stetson hats, bandannas, spurs, cowboy boots and buckskins. Other characters include Native Americans, bandits, lawmen, bounty hunters, outlaws, mounted cavalry, settlers and townsfolk.
The Last of the Mohicans is too, though (in a sense). Both the 1992 and 1920 versions. But, Kill Bill Vol. 2 is not.
