Any word yet on these issues the original US DVDs had?
The Man from Marseilles It's not the syndicated version, but still a whopping three minutes were cut. (The UK DVDs are fine.) L.A. One minute cut from the chase/jacuzzi scene (again, the UK set is uncut). Resolutions The series finale was not only split into two parts, they also used the syndicated versions which omitted several scenes as well as that beautiful montage at the very end. (This time, the UK DVDs repeated the mistake. The intact two-hour version can only be found on the German DVDs.) |

There's a distinctive piece of music that runs through those teasers, building to a peak right before launching into that iconic theme tune. I can't imagine what it would be like without them. Thanks again, Desk |

Thanks for checking, it's a shame they're still doing that.
Here's what the final end credits are supposed to look like: What about the other two episodes? In particular, The Man from Marseilles should hopefully have the same runtime as all the others. On the old DVDs, it was three minutes short. |

Box arrived yesterday. Spent about 40min checking PQ on random episodes across all seasons. Some are sensational - natural looking film grain, nice blacks, rich colour. I would agree these compare favourably with the best 80s TV show transfers, including ST Next Gen.
Unfortunately, I also encountered episodes that appear to be no better than DVD quality. Total absence of film grain, detail limited, colours and contrast flattening out. I haven't spent enough time looking over the set to ascertain what the approximate ratio is or indeed if there is a pattern to it (eg. whether some seasons fair better than others). I'm hoping it may be a case of a few eps they were unable to source HD masters for, not some cost saving short cut. I'll report back when I have more time for a closer inspection over the net few days. |

It would be nice if you can name the episodes that have a crappy picture quality especially from Season 1-3. ![]() |

I've now had a chance to skim over seasons 1, 2, 3, and 5. My primary interest is with the PQ, whether it's worth recommending to fans who already own the DVD sets. I'm not watching full episodes so can't comment too much on possible audio anomalies. The bits I looked over sounded excellent. For reference, my PQ benchmark is the original Battlestar Galactica OAR edition, which I consider a superb and very faithful transfer of a similarly vintage show. Marks are out of 5. Season 1 picture quality scores an average 4.5. It starts off quite strong and actually improves as the season goes on. Season 2 shows a little more variation in PQ, a couple episodes scored a 3 but overall I’d still give it a 4. Only one episode, "Woman on the Beach", on disc 1, stood out as having received over zealous digital noise reduction and some edge enhancement. It’s certainly not unwatchable but is noticeably inferior to the rest of the season presentation. Since it was only one episode I didn’t let it affect the overall score. Season 3 Tempted to give this season full marks. This and s1 are the most consistently strong so far. Beautiful, sometimes jaw droppingly good colour, nice blacks, natural film grain, great detail. 4.7 Season 5 This season is a little more scattered in PQ consistency. It also happened to be the first season I sampled when it arrived so it unfortunately gave me a poor initial impression. The reason I was keen to have a quick look at some of these episodes is because I wanted to see 80s Sharon Stone and Jenny Agutter. So it’s with some regret that I must report that the first two episodes of the season, which feature Ms Stone, also feature liberal use of DNR. These eps may be only marginally better than they appear on DVD. Actually the first 4 episodes on disc 1 of s5 are heavily DNR’d. Only the fifth ep on disc 1, "Under World", is reasonably good PQ, suffering with a slightly grey cast. The grey cast appears again over the Jenny Agutter episode, "Little Games" which I did a side by side with the DVD version. Image resolution and detail is much strong so DNR is not the issue here but this bloody murky cast affecting daylight and daytime interiors contaminates colour vibrancy and tends to flatten tonal values. Disc 2 "Blind Justice" has heavy DNR. Other episodes on the disc rate between 3-5. Disc 3 "Compulsion" has heavy DNR. Other episodes on the disc rate between 3-5. Disc 4 and 5 are reasonable to very strong. PQ rating 3-5. That's all for now. I'll be back when I've looked at the rest of the series. |

I received my Magnum set for Christmas and I concur with what Thus Spake Zathrus is saying. Those season 5 episodes are DNR'd, which is disappointing, but I still think it looks better than DVD. I don't why Universal would DNR some episodes and leave others alone.
I did check out one episode from Season 7 (the Murder She Wrote crossover episode) and it looks fine. No DNR. Overall, I'm enjoying it so far. |
