So what happened to George A Romero? Has he given up on Zombie movies entirely now that the Walking Dead has taken over airwaves? Or is it because he's 76 and rather retire?

The Dawn Of The Dead remake is a solid roller-coaster ride, a fast and well-acted combo of action and horror.
Romero's original combines horror, humor and action to much better effect and contributes sly social commentary besides; it's a true classic. It takes place in a mall so Romero can draw an analogy between cannabalism and consumerism, and this was in 1978, before the gluttony of consumerism and materialism became an accepted and widespread part of our culture. It is every bit as prescient a film as Network. The remake takes place in a mall for no other reason than that the first one did, and Snyder misses out on making a valid social statement in 2004 about where we are now as a consumer culture. Romero wanted to take us for a ride and give us something to ponder. Snyder just wants to take us for a ride, and perhaps the fact that he doesn't want to give us anything to think about or doesn't think we want to be given anything to think about, is unintentionally the most damning social statement of all. |
