So luckily I have one of the Panasonic TVs that support HLG. Just had a quick look at the footage on I Player and all I can say is wow! If the footage is an indication of the quality of the UHD then this is a must buy for me.

Because the signal is compatible with older SDR sets. Same reasoning NTSC color was used when black and white was prevalent.

As I understand it, HLG can be added via firmware since it just requires a change in hdmi signal processing. LG at least has said it's 2016 sets are capable of doing this and will add it in the future (http://www.lgnewsroom.com/2016/08/ne...-technologies/)

The better question is, 3 HDR formats would seem excessive. No UHD players even support Dolby Vision and here with HLG. Going to be a huge mess if you have discs that are HDR in some players/TVs and not others.

I just bought the LG 65" OLED E6 with Dolby Vision, now there's HLG and no word yet if my TV will be firmware-upgradeable to it, or if LG is going to say "No, buy a new TV".

I wasn't alive for it, but I know back in the day TV buying decisions were simply: "This one's Black & White! This one's in colour! This one's in colour and comes with a remote!"
At this rate my next set will be 2019! - though thinking about it, that would be 5 years with my current set so quite appropriate
Hopefully by then there's a 2018 75" Sony OLED at a reasonable price (seems next year rumours are just of 55" and 65" models) with all the wacky HDR formats supported and passive 3D. Until that happens am stuck with my SDR 79x900B, which at every UHD turn is getting less and less support!

I don't see where on that page it says that 2016 models can be upgraded to HLG. Those are prototypes aka next year's models.

Ah, right. I've just been told that the Panasonic's don't have HLG, and if you read the blurb on the actual BBC page it basically says that they're not using the HLG yet, even though they waffle on about it as being part of this test. Bolded for emphasis:

So basically it's not even in HDR at this moment (an AVF user confirmed it wasn't activating HDR) but it IS in the wider 2020 colour gamut according to that same user.

Default Planet Earth HD DVD

The Original BBC Planet Earth was first released in HD DVD format prior to BD.
Let's make sure we all jump on PE II in UHD before UHD goes the way of HD DVD. Streaming will definitely be king within five years for better or worst.

Just pre-ordered 4K UHD version from Amazon US.

First video content of any kind I've ever "pre-ordered" let alone the first I've done so when there is no release date yet!

Amazon has it for sale on preorder so if someone says that Best Buy has an "exclusive" it would not be for long.

If Best Buy have an exclusive, they might have it earlier than everyone else.... however the exclusive could just be actual brick stores, and not online. Cannot wait. Just purchased UHD player, and The Revenant looks awesome on it.

BBC America premiere has been delayed 3 weeks to February 18:

http://thefutoncritic.com/news/2017/...0170103bbca01/

That puts the finale on April 1st. Expect the UHD release between then and Earth Day 3 weeks later.

For those interested (like myself, who just bought an OLED), here is a link to LG's statement that 2016 sets *will* be firmware upgradable to HLG:
