It seems to be an "in" thing to cast and make musicals with actors who can't sing - LA LA Land, Les Misérables, Mama Mia (both). The talent isn't there.

We need "stars" as opposed to people who can actually sing to sell tickets to a musical, apparently.

If we think about it, Steve Martin was never a real singer either, and while his singing talent is just a so-so job, his ability to make us laugh made him an acceptable dentist.

Yes, it IS sad how they cast non-singers in musical features.

If they go with the Broadway ending, they might face the same problems Frank Oz faced during test screenings....an unhappy audience that is angry that the likable main characters faced such a dark ending. Movies don't have the luxury of bringing the actors out afterwards for a curtain call and remind everyone this is only a play....movies have a different impact on people. People die...roll credits. Our final impression stays with us and dark endings like that are not popular with the mainstream audience.

Unless they change Seymor's character and make HIM become dark in the end and we see the wisdom of his fatal ending.

La La Land didn't exactly have the happiest of endings for its likable characters and it was a massive success. I think modern audiences are more open to movies that end on a downnote. Hell, modern audiences are open to at least watching big screen live action musicals which by itself is a huge change from the mid-80s when Frank Oz's Little Shop of Horrors was released.

I really wish they would just go back to dubbing actors with professional singers when they sing. As someone who’s received formal training, I’d prefer it.

You and me both. I’ve been doing musical theater professionally for a while now and it bugs me to death they make musicals with people who can’t sing. I get it. Your stars have to be marketable but then Just dub them. Also often times directors have hard time capturing the energy a musical number should have. It also sounds so lazy and flat because they have an actor who can’t sing in the studio doing their best softly into a mic then in the final mix the pump up what was a low volume performance up above all the high volume instruments.

I always hated Marni Nixon’s voice coming out of every female star who wasn’t a trained singer. Audrey Hepburn wasn’t a great singer, but I far prefer her own singing in Funny Face, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the clips which exist of her original voice in My Fair Lady, to the dubbed over singing in that film.

Hell no! I hate that about older musicals. If they can't sing worth a damn, don't cast them.

Well the past 15 years or more of movie musicals show studios aren’t willing to cast people who can sing over a big name.

They'll cast people who are just good enough to carry a tune(perhaps with a little technological assistance in the case of Emma Watson and Dan Stevens).

I still prefer that over actors lip syncing over someone else's vocals.

That’s the problem. As a singer, being able to carry a tune isn’t good enough. Sorry. If it were any other aspect of the movie, Ppl would be tearing that aspec to shreds. Mediocre cgi? Boring songs? Your putting hundreds of millions of dollars to make the movie, get a real singer. One way or the other. These big actors are dubbing themselves anyway. It’s not live singing (les mis aside but the live singing there was just as bad) also you can HEAR all the “technological assistance” they put on the actors voices. So if something is gonna take me out of the movie I’d rather it be a beautiful voice then Borg assimilated mediocre to bad vocals that bring down the quality of the movie. THEN young people coming up think that’s the way they should sound when they sing and develop terrible technique and sound terrible. But your entitled to your opinion. I just completely completely disagree.

There’re barely any actual actors that could also sing professionally or hold a note out worth a damn.

I hope the actors cast sing their own songs. I'm not a fan of dubbing someone else's vocals. With the exception of Ellen Greene and Levi Stubbs, I don't think anyone in the '86 film was a professional singer, and that one turned out well.

As for Evans, he's a solid choice for the dentist. You don't have to have that good of a singing voice for that role(case in point, Steve Martin). And he's able to carry a tune as he showed in Not Another Teen Movie.

Edgerton is perfect for Seymour. Johannson as Audrey? Physically she's right for the role. But musically she's a step down from Ellen Greene in the 1986 film.
Edgerton isn't dorky enough to be Seymour. ScarJo is just a disaster in the making.

I feared a reboot of this film. It has been one of my favorite movies since I saw it in theaters as a little guy. I wore out my original tape and have worn through a couple of CD’s listening to it in the car over the years and enjoy the alternate lyrics for Mean Green Mother From Outer Space on the soundtrack.

I’ve had the privilege of meeting and conversing with the AMAZING Mrs. Green herself and there was a lot of serious discussion and de
