CGI Leia was mercifully brief, but she wasn't as unnerving as Tarkin.

They still haven't quite solved the 'dead stare' of CGI created characters. Especially when dealing with recreating well known performers. They didn't quite nail Peter Cushings voice and accent either.

I kinda imagined that they would have pulled footage from unseen/unreleased ANH deleted scenes and footage (we know that Lucasfilm keeps everything that has ever been filmed and recorded for the SW films in their archives) and built CGI Leia and Tarkin on those templates, but it doesn't look like they did that.

I wish I'd seen this fresh faced, as opposed to tired and pissed off after a day of crap at the office, as it might have tainted my viewing a bit.

I didn't have the same elated feeling that I had upon exiting TFA, but I still dug the f*** out of it. I was surprised by the amount of humour it, humour which actually works as opposed to the cringe-worthy bollocks that George Lucas writes. The only thing I didn't really care for was the score, or that Vader looks like a fat bastard in some shots, because of the way his cloak sits, (the front neck of his mask also looks weird, as it sits out from the rest of the suit).

Man, that ending!

Now that that's done, Disney, listen closely. No more Death Stars, Starkiller Bases, or anything remotely similar. Finished. Done. Finito.

Let the next super weapon be multiple planets, an actual solar system of planets that act similar to the failed earth defense weapon from Independence Day Resurgence (Generated beams of firepower between them all into one shot). I'd be on board for that.

4/5

The movie was certainly well made but I felt a bit bored.

Donnie Yen was the shit! He was the soul of the film! The only parts where I teared up was during Donnie Yen's first fight scene againsy the Stormtroopers and his death scene. And he had dialogue! Finally! Thanks Garreth!

That final Darth Vader scene - damn!!! That was f'ing sweet!

Did anyone else feel that Darth Vader seemes smallish? At least in Revenge of Sith, it felt like his old body. In Rogue, he seemed sort of different.

The actor playing Vader in Rogue One is 7 inches taller than Christensen...

End of story. Why is this even being debated???
Because 3PO and R2 needing to be where they need to be on the Tantive IV at the end of Rogue One is paramount in terms of the original Star Wars movie actually existing at all! If they're not on that particular blockade runner that means that the Rogue One filmmakers crapped all over the original classic!

Short and fat. It's the cloak's fault, IMO.

I was surprised at Tarkin's height, quite intimidating.

He really wasn't a terrific capture, but I did appreciate the intent behind it. He gave some ínteresting dialogue revealing the stations capabilities at (then) current time. "I want to send a message, not a manifesto"

So saw this twice at the Embassy in Wellington city. I went with a gathering of about 12 people, (2 of them worked for Weta Workshop as i'd later find out.fully connected haha. )

The Embassy is a beautiful cinema, they have a tunnel leading into a bar directly beneath the auditorium. as there were people in stormtrooper and fighter pilot outfits it was like walking into Cantina, so AWESOME. The theatre is beautiful, old style vaudevillian architecture/aesthetic.

Equipped with Dolby Atmos I have to say the Dolby Demo had me excited for what was to come that did sound amazing in sound placement. I was actually mildly disappointed with the sonic performance of the movie, I had trouble discerning dialogue, Really struggle to hear what Donny Yen was saying at certain points, among other characters. It is my first visit there so was adjusting to the experience.

The overhead sound was negligible I would say not even worth the effort, there was heavy surround activity but nothing that couldn't be emulated in a smaller house. As it stands i prefer the sound of my local theatre in Nelson.

I'm settling on the fact that 3d is a barrier to the story, at midnight I just found it hard to settle in with the fast editing. HEAPS to take in visually, I'd then find I missed key quotes haha.

some small projection issues I saw in both 3d and 2d looked like 'giant scanlines as well, but I did not consider this a detraction to the experience

The film I preferred in 2d and on second visit, I like it very much, I feel it is a wonderful tribute to the original star wars and the best "prequel" as it is classed. I liked character beats from The Force Awakens, which perhaps piqued my interest more and would possibly lean towards this in preference between the two.

K-2S0 at both sessions had the audience in his grasp, real side splitter that one, I loved him.

my personal biggest gag was Chirrut Imwe

"Are you kidding me? I'm blind"

4/5. ULTRA COMBO ending

You don't have to explain that to me. I'm asking why people think it's not possible?!? I just saw it again. How is this even a question???

Well I think I'm sticking with chronological order instead of machete now. After just watching 3 last night I feel like it was a really good bridge between 3 and 4 plus the ending leading up directly to ANH got a huge applause.

Also I have to say the score was fantastic. Michael Giacchino did a great job picking up for John Williams. Pretty bummed to see it isn't released on vinyl tomorrow...only digital and CD.

Agreed. I honestly would have been pissed if Jyn had lived and, somehow, ended up giving birth to Rey. That's where I thought they were going with all of her climbing and jumping around. Glad for that.

Yeah going in I fully expected that to be the big twist. The fact that they instead kill pretty much everyone off left my jaw on the floor but I loved it. This story needed to have an ending like that imo. If they tried weaving these people into the greater story I would've been really let down. I've already texted my dad asking when he is ready to see it haha. Unfortunately the wife doesn't want to see it again.

Disney has always had balls. Has anyone seen how insane POTC3 was? Disney has always had it in them, but this seems to be the franchise that really allows them to pull out all stops. Now, I knew it was a forgone conclusion that most, if not all, of these brave characters would bite the dust before the credits rolled, but it still nailed me that they went and killed EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM! Again though, it was sort of a forgone thing if you knew anything about A New Hope at all and that if Vader knew about the spies in that film that there was no way he would let any of them live in this one. So it all lines up perfectly and makes since why Leia never heard of Jyn Erso. She never met her. K2-S0's sacrifice scene really got me too. Star Wars has always had a way of making you care about characters that aren't even "alive" in the technical sense of the word and K2-S0 is no exception. Exceptional work. And for those saying that this story was not about Jyn Erso at all, Grace Randolph, it is totally about Jyn Erso as she is the focal point that sets the whole plot in motion. And Felicity Jones nailed the growth of Jyn perfectly from scraggy and defeatist to sacrificial hero. Cassian was amazing too. Diego Luna was incredible. The whole freaking movie was incredible and I have every intent to see it again.

What Disney does with Marvel never gives me much faith they have much balls. That's why I wasn't sure what they would be willing to do here. This was a far departure from what they are willing to do with their Marvel characters. I guess it helps though that these were new characters and not ones all meant to sell action figures like the Avengers are. Killing one of them has repercussions on what you can sell. I get it from the financial side. Just seeing something like War Machine fall to the ground at terminal velocity and have trouble walking only really ticked me off. No matter how amazing that suit is the dudes insides would be jello. No suit is helping that fall from the sky.

Anyone else hear the loud speaker in the Rebel hanger on Yavin call out for General Syndulla? Thought that was cool. Cham or Hera?

Loved all the nods to 1977. Especially the Cantina villains that ran afoul of Obi Wan.
