Personally, I wouldn't buy a used remote control because of the wear and tear, and you don't know how long it's going to last. If you're planning on keeping the receiver, It's best to get a brand new remote control. You may pay a little bit more, but it will be worth it.

My parents had three - Onkyo, Denon and Sony in their house and I never recall them having trouble with any of them. Onkyo and Denon were both from the late 1990s when we got a DVD player. The Sony was newer but was one of the cheap models that only did basic DTS and DD decoding.

HDMI switching on ours conked out after unit was out of warranty. They would not sell me a $75.00 part, insisting that I take the unit to a factory authorized repair center where they were going to charge $600 to fix it -- more than the unit was worth at that point in its career. It was a well-known problem with this model. Never again. Loving our new Yamaha. We can finally understand dialog.

I switch to Yamaha after my Onkyo crap out on the HDMI, and read how unreliable they became. My 15 year old Onkyo is still working, and they just don't make like that anymore.
Go for a Yamaha AVR if you want something to last long. |

So, any advice would be appreciated. Warning: I am not a sound expert or a tech smarty. I just like having the setup and sound for some decent blu-ray movie viewing. I bought my current receiver, the Onkyo TX-SR706, in February of 2009. Been fine up until around this year, and got worse yesterday. The main problem is when I switch HDMI inputs. They just aren’t recognized, and I get a black screen with a message that there’s no signal and to check the connections, and then the screen goes to blue. I’ve tried tricks with turning on the device (my PS3 and my region-free blu) first and then switching, and sometimes I’ll get a second’s worth of the right picture/menu, so I know the devices are on and fine. But then they fade to black and then blue. I got a new HDMI cable just in case it was that, but same issue; and I tried switching the devices to different inputs to see if it was just one that was worse, but it wasn’t. In addition, my speakers (5.1 BOSE setup...don’t make fun!) have recently started “chirping” loudly every so often. Intermittent and random through various speakers, but loud and annoying. Like a digital bird. I also sense deep base sounds/gulps every so often. So far, thankfully, my main input (my TiVo) hasn’t gone out, so I can watch ...but watching movies now seems impossible. I checked my serial number on that Onkyo page and it is NOT eligible for the help (despite having the same problems). Guess mine was manufactured right before 2009. Any thoughts? What is the typical lifespan for a receiver? I thought it would be longer. I don’t want to spend too much money trying to fix this one if I’m just going to have to buy a new one. And if I need a new one, what brands/types do you all recommend for my (modest) needs? Thanks! |

I bought a HT-RC360 back in 2012 (2011 model). I never had a issue (other than the remote crapping out on me and having to buy a new one directly from Onkyo). I recently replaced it with the TX-NR656 (since the 360 doesn't support 4K).

Bought a TX-SR608 back in 2011, like most models of that era it had the "HDMI Gremlin", meaning the HDMI output board failed.
After checking on YouTube, I found a repair fix for it, the capacitors on the board were not thermally rated properly, believe they were only rated for 85 degrees C, and they recommended 105 degrees C ones. Spent part of one of my afternoons when I worked for Fisher Price Power Wheels test labs replacing the components. Worked solid for years afterwards, gave the still working unit, and my original SKS-HT870 Speaker sets to my son, after I upgraded to on-wall mounted Klipsch speakers and a newer 4K Onkyo receiver (TX-NR797) earlier this year. Thus far I have not had a single issue with the new receiver, it's much larger and does not seem to run nearly as hot. |
