Exactly. Hateful Eight is Ultra Panavision 70, anamorphic lenses especially those they used (even if some were updated) are never as sharp as spherical lenses, although they can look tack sharp.

I mean, even on BD, cropped, you're not gonna find anything that beats the clarity of those IMAX scenes in TDK or Interstellar.

Having seen TH8 in its full glory in theaters with a top notch projection, it looked really sharp, obviously not as sharp as the DCP probably looks.

Writer-director Christopher Nolan's World War II drama Dunkirk — shot on 65mm film by Hoyte van Hoytema, ASC, FSF, NSC — will be featured in the August issue of American Cinematographer. Last year, Nolan, van Hoytema and producer Emma Thomas visited the at the ASC Clubhouse to discuss their battle plans for the project.

TDK and Intersteller both look fantastic in those scenes, but there are shots from the Alexa 65 that rival it IMHO. Some scenes in Life and The Revenant come to mind. But there is something to be said about IMAX footage. We watched MI Ghost Protocol a few weeks ago and the scenes from that looked fantastic as well.

I wished that Brad Bird had signed off on MI Ghost Protocol getting shifting aspect ratios on home release. I understand his point of view, but despite losing out on some of the scope, especially during the burj khalifa scenes, it still would have been pretty darn cool to see at home.

There certainly still is an appreciable difference in clarity in those scenes that utilized the IMAX camera.

Amazon.in's got a Dec. 5 release date for this. Sounds plausible.

Strange that info has been edited. You can't release Dolby Vision without Dolby Atmos.
Dolby should get their things right.

It may/may not have been done before (Vision without Atmos inside a Dolby Cinema venue) but I think they'll make exceptions for people like Nolan.

Didn't AMC trick the people in the USA before? Saying Dolby Cinema, but a part (Vision or Atmos) was missing?

Btw check your PM, Geoff, sent you a PM, did you got it?

As stated before, Nolan would mix in monaural if he could.

I did, sorry for not replying sooner. My answer is: I dunno. Other people have gotten the latest issues way before me so the information will surely pop up when it pops up, although I doubt AC will go into heavy detail about the various finishes that the film will receive.

Also I noticed Dolby Atmos has been removed on IMDb. Normally it would take ages before changes are applied...

Yet oddly the 12channel mix remains - I'm sure that'll be removed as well

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Director of Photography Hoyte Van Hoytema shot on KODAK VISION3 5203, 5207, 5213 and 5219.
http://www.kodak.com/motion/Blog/Blo...tId=4295002639

Quote:
“With the release of Dunkirk, Nolan, Thomas and van Hoytema demonstrate the visual power of film with a go-big-or-go-home epic shot on a combination of 15-perf Imax 65mm and 5-perf 65mm, and finished entirely in the photochemical realm. Nolan feels that the movie can stake a claim to being ‘the highest-resolution feature film that has ever been made,’ while also providing ample evidence of celluloid’s additional merits. Although van Hoytema concedes that the size of the 65mm cameras made his extensive use of handheld work a bit challenging, he calls the added camera weight ‘an insignificant element when compared to the quality of the images we produced.’

“Shooting in these formats on such a grand scale required a number of innovative approaches, detailed by AC contributor Michael Goldman in his main article on the show.”

In addition to the cover story, the Dunkirk reporting includes extensive behind-the-scenes photography by Melinda Sue Gordon, two sidebars and bonus coverage to be posted here on ascmag.com when the August issue is released.

Do we know whether Nolan's films will have shifting aspect ratios on UHD? Lionsgate ditched the shifting ratio on the UHD of Hunger Games Catching Fire. I'd hate for WB to do the same with Nolan's film.

Yes, at the AMC Empire Dolby Cinema they will frequently play titles without Atmos and especially Vision (though that has become a bit less as number of Vision titles are increasing), with no difference in advertising or ticket price there. Which is why I feel Dolby getting their website info properly updated is important, and is a disadvantage Dolby Cinema has to IMAX IMO (where if you see a title there, you know you are getting an IMAX DMR and sound mix, though if Atmos is indeed dropped for Dunkirk, I expect that means no 12 channel IMAX mix either and Nolan will just use the old IMAX sound system, which does tick me off).

Catching Fire was a special situation though. The director said they didn’t want it to feel like the movie was “glorifying” the Hunger Games which, honestly, is a stupid thing to think. The films themselves are already glorifying the violent revolution that takes place so it’s not like anybody really got a different message from the aspect ratio change.
