4k will become the standard (and replace BR) in a few years. So why not just get this 4k release (because a BR disc is included)? Seems like a win win.

You can make the argument that Blu-ray isn't even the standard today.

Exactly, more people still buy DVD. The rest stream. Blu-ray really is mostly for real collectors. I have no idea what the fate of 4k will be but it isn't going to become the new standard.

I can see a tiem coming very soon where they no longer offer the 4k masters on standard blu-ray and keep them UHD only. That is going to hurt, especially when it's something like The Untouchables or Predator. Im just glad they are doing a remastered blu-ray for this at least.

What is the rationale for passing on the UHD/Blu combo? Watch the blu now and switch over to the UHD after display upgrade.

Do any numbers corroborate this assertion?

Price.

Why pay more for a release that includes a format I can't use?

The people who support this industry aren't the masses though. Enthusiasts upgrade. "Collectors" is a small percent of enthusiasts. It is more than obvious that those who are most informed and who appreciate image quality expect UHD to be the new standard. Period. It doesn't matter what soccer Mommy and Daddy buy.

You will use it next year or soon thereafter. Sell the blu then.

Again, it doesn't matter what the Walmart lemmings buy. Informed consumers are the target since the masses will do whatever they do regardless.

I would like to but I don't make the decisions in my household when it comes to upgrading of technology. Trust me, I've tried.

I would agree with this. It's stupid how many people watch DVDs on their HDTVs... and think the picture looks good (or good enough). These people should have just a bought a 720p set and saved their money.

I can't wait for a remastered BD.I highly doubt 4K will become the new standard. I've embraced all the formats with open arms but not 4K. I just came home from a shopping trip from HMV which is closing here in Canada. The store in my area closes Sunday. 50% off everything. I purchased 24 BD's for $250 and many new releases. My point is stores aren't supporting physical media anymore aside from Walmart. Even Best Buy has scaled back a lot. My friends and coworkers laugh that I still buy Bd. That said evwn if it somehow became the new standard I still wouldn't support it because I love my projector and Oppo and don't see a big enough difference to upgrade all my gear and replace 1000 movies.

Do we?

I'm not sure we can say with any certainty that Criterion or Arrow or Kino (just to name a few) are going to move to UHD at all in the next few years and it seems beyond far-fetched to think they're going to drop BD in the process.

UHD still has an uphill climb even among enthusiasts. Not all enthusiasts are sold on the benefits of upgrading our entire A/V chain and we certainly don't think UHD is going to replace BD in the next few years.

And even if there isn't a separate BD release, this release will almost certainly drop to an extremely tempting price point sooner or later.

Whatever one think of UHD, this is Good News®.

i think it's logical to say they wouldn't be remastering it to release a "worse" version, so they're certainly intending it to be "better".

whether or not it actually is better will have to be judged by the final product, but my money would be on 'yes', it most likely will be if your standard is PQ. hopefully they'll also include all previous extras and maybe add some too.

LOL... Dude, for the people that are all about selling the product, that's pretty much ALL that matters.

Although I'm sure that you would be very convincing trying to pitch the idea of how amazing UHD in some CEO's office while the sales charts show that a product which is cheaper to manufacture is selling more.

I'm sure it'll be better, but that won't stop the complaints about darkness and softness and framing and so on.

- I can't afford to buy a new set and I'm tired of buying the same movies every few years. And paying more money to do it.
