MY GF and I have completely separate budgets and bank accounts, which is part of the reason we get along so well. Neither one of us give a shit about getting married either, so even if we have a kid we probably won't tie the knot. She has a solid-paying job as do I, and I don't bug her about what she spends her money on, so she doesn't bug me about what I spend my money on. I have a media room where I store all my films and we watch movies together a couple times a week. I've dated women in the past who wouldn't keep it remotely this simple and cool, but it's great when you find a woman who does.

My wife makes comments from time to time but never gets mad about it. I get good deals.

Plus in our new setup the collection is hidden, so it's like it doesn't exist

My wife makes jokes with me about it but she doesnt have a major problem with it. When we first started dating I had a ton of DVDs so she knew what she was getting into. One thing I'll always remember about her is coming home from work one day early into our dating and finding that she picked Halloween 4 as the movie to watch, I thought to myself "I like this one".

I have noticed her watching habits have changed a bit over the years. I could stay home almost every day and watch movies but she likes to go out and do stuff.

It makes bdays and Xmas easy for her bc I just tell her what blus I want.

My wife is very cool about our library, we have similar tastes in movies (she hates chick flicks) and she knows I keep my spending under control so we don't have any issues in the finance department. Some of the titles in there are hers specifically since she loves mysteries, Scooby Doo and Supernatural. Those I can live with since most of the titles she collects are really good.
She's a sci-fi and horror nerd like me so I'm lucky in that aspect and she's very easy on the eyes.

I'll push the envelope in terms of what movies I watch with my girlfriend. She likes weird shit like Lynch and Cronenberg films, but "The Holy Mountain" was one of the few films that was beyond her threshold for weirdness. She doesn't dig exploitation films, so I don't impose those on her. There was a stretch when we were watching a bunch of weird films together and she said, "F**k, I just want to watch 'Crazy Stupid Love' or something like that." Hey, I'll admit I'm not too proud to enjoy the occasional rom-com.

My SO is not into movies so much, she prefers the Murder Channel, or Big Bang Theory. We have a 21x28 room that is a home theater. She never complains about all of the posters, action figures, books about movies and other assorted stuff I have. I could bring in 10 new blu's a week and she would never notice. She works nights 3 days a week and that is when I watch most of my stuff, but she will watch a lot with me. Awesome.

Recently I received The Dracula and Mummy Legacies in the mail. Her response: "Meh. It's not crack."

Conversely, she doesn't care at all about me having a collection, so when my 2 year old dumped juice in my coffee table/steam crate where I keep my movies so my two year old doesn't get juice on them, she laughed. Reminds me not to take the hobby seriously.
I would assume if they are posting on here they probably are into the hobby, no?

Some people complain that there aren't as many female director's as men, but maybe that is partly because women tend to not be film buffs as much.

Or maybe it's because women aren't given as many chances as men are?

My wife left in the days of Laserdisc collecting. She just couldn't understand my obsession and the expense. Been single ever since and can now collect my Blu-ray movies in relative peace.

I said partly. It doesn't make sense that there would be as many women directors as men if women aren't as into movies as me.

This thread has made me feel right at home, not gonna lie. All I ever hear/have heard about is my interests. Be it movies in general, Blu-ray/DVD collecting, Pokemon, anime, comic books, action figures, you name it. It's all a problem and always has been.

I'll never understand why women feel the need to harp on every little thing. If it makes you happy and you can function in your daily life why does it matter? If you go and work your ass off at work, whatever it is you do, why does it make a difference what you spend a portion of your money and free time on? As long as you're happy and not hurting anyone.

Don't let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do in life, interests or anything else. If they have a problem with it then they can go figure it out on their own and not drag you down with them. That's the best advice I have to anyone in a relationship like this.

Was she Satan by chance, because that may be the most vile and evil act I've ever heard.

I have been single and retired for many years; I can barely imagine anyone criticizing my hobbies. I have had everything my way for so long now, I am certain that I can not live any other way.

I have no significant other right now, but I have a mother who has fallen out of love with cinema and considers all movies to be a waste of time and money now. So of course she flips out over my collection--she's always telling me to stop wasting my money, save everything for retirement, I don't need to own or upgrade everything, and so on.

My money's in good shape for now, so I will splurge next month...

I'm not looking to start a woman vs. man war here, but that could be explained simply by looking at any movie convention, I can't remember what thread it was here but this was being talked about there too: 85%-90% of people you find there are going to be men, it's just the way it is. I'm not saying men are better at directing, just that there are more men in this field than women.

Again, I'm hoping this doesn't turn into a sexism flame war. Just stating facts.

I wonder if it's because (with my experience at least) they don't have anything that makes them happy like we do so it may be a jealousy issue. I've had friends give up film collecting for their significant others and when they break up or get divorced they get all upset because they gave up what they love doing for them so you are absolutely right about not letting anyone influence you or try and control you.
