My guess is, this will be the best animated film UHD Blu-ray released visually, amazing color, contrast, detail and HDR demonstration.

I don’t think it’ll top Cars 3, which looks almost hyperreal at times. Despicable Me 3 was pretty generic at times, and it didn’t think it was quite as vibrant as Minions or 2.

This should be seen in 3D doesn’t benefit much from UHD like the Dolby vision versions and I’ve them all on both formats

Watched this, the movie's pretty much Despicable Meh but the visuals are...interesting. It doesn't look as sharp as DM2 but I don't think it's the "transfer" as such, it's more the aesthetic for the movie in general. It looks to me like they've gone the Lego movie route and have based the cinematography around the real-world traits of anamorphic, which results in a slightly more diffuse look than the previous movies (indeed, the Kyle mini-movie on the disc actually looks sharper).
You get the shallower depth of field and oval bokeh (out of focus elements) in the background that's also typical of anamorphic but most interestingly the UHD appears to have a very fine layer of what I can only call "grain", it does a fantastic job of dithering the colour gradients and I didn't spot a single instance of banding in the blue skies and whatnot. The HDR is much like it is on the other DM flicks, lots of bright 'pop' and vivid colour without necessarily expanding the highlights all that much. |

Well, my niece who's 6, and my nephew who is 3 both loved it enough after seeing it theatrically, to want to see it again at the second run 'dollar theater'. They like it as much as any other kid cartoon films, they liked it slightly more than Cars 3.
It may not be quite as good as the first two, but that's something only perceivable to adults. I thought Balthazar Bratt was mildly annoying. It's still way better than Minions. |

I completely agree, DM2 and Minions both have a sharp and rather saturated look to them where the colors are a lot more vibrant and stand out. This one had a visual style more closer to the first one, which also wasn't as sharp. This one does have more impressive shots (especially landscapes), and the shift to 2.35 definitely shows a difference.

Watched this last night and it was pretty good. I think the series has slowly declined in quality with each film, which isn't too surprising, but this was still an above-average kids movie. As much as I try to limit my 2-year old's screen time there are times when I just don't have the energy for anything else and this is one of those movies I will gladly watch with him and get enjoyment out of for at least a dozen viewings before I start to get depressed when he picks it out at movie time.
It's hard for me to speak to the PQ since this was actually the first DV title I've watched since getting my OPPO and I spent a lot of time messing with the settings on my LG 65OLEDB6P to get things to my liking. It looked great once I got things in order, but the visual design of the movie itself didn't really click with me. The whole color scheme was distracting and seemingly chaotic in many of the scenes, but I might change my mind when I rewatch it and can focus on the movie instead of my TV settings. |
