Speaking of Deep Discount here :

Code Witches just worked for me, 12:50pm Central here.

Now since the only Criterion left that I want is " The Philadelphia Story "
the best price for ONLY that title is here at Deep Discount.

$24.08 TOTAL inc. shipping. B & N next month would be $25.82 w/my state's sales tax + $3.99 shipping.

I'm far from an expert, but the PQ looks really great. My copy came in this morning.

Can't wait for my copy to arrive! The extras on this look like they blow the old special edition DVD set out of the water - albeit that set has some great features that are not on this release.

Now bring on Bringing Up Baby!!

It's loaded, but it excludes the awesome documentaries from the WB DVD. So if you have the latter, you'll want to hold onto the second disc if that stuff means anything to you.

Oh yes. I'll be hanging on to my WB 2-disc DVD regardless as it's long OOP, rare, and as you said has some great documentaries worth revisiting from time to time.

It came down to this film or His Girl Friday for my final blind buy of this current Barnes and Noble sale.

It was a very tough decision, but I ultimately chose The Philadelphia Story because I liked the cover art better.

Is that weird?

Yes. Should've bought both.

No matter the reason, I think you made the right choice.

That's interesting.

I raised the question of which film was better on the Criterion thread and I'd say the responses were about 50/50.

The first scene with Cary Grant is one of the funniest things I've ever seen

I personally like His Girl Friday much better. The Philadelphia Story is a great film with great talent, but it doesn't resonate with me like His Girl Friday.

However, the Criterion extras for both releases, as usual, deepen our appreciation for both films.

His Girl Friday is one of those films that gets funnier the more you watch it. So much dialog comes at you at a rapid fire its easy to miss a lot on the 1st viewing.

Both are great films though

Well I just finished watching this for the first time.

To be honest, it didn't really do much for me.

It's a perfectly good, traditional Hollywood studio film, but nothing about it really excited me. You've got Jimmy Stewart playing Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant playing Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, who quite frankly I've never really enjoyed that much as a actor. Not that it's relevant, but I don't find her attractive at all and her voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard...at least to me.

And the whole upper-class, bourgeois milieu just doesn't appeal to me.

No big deal.

Just not the blind buy I was hoping for.

It wouldn't be a blind buy for me, as I saw it many years ago and adored it, but I'm holding off since I'm afraid it won't hold up for me. That's what happened with Bringing up Baby years ago. I had seen it and loved it, but then I rewatched it a few years later and it just annoyed me, and Hepburn's (who I love) voice had the same nails on a chalkboard sound to me.

It's a good film, no doubt about it.

But one of the greatest American films of all time?

Not for me.
