Well, apparently it's not an either/or situation: SCE's got a dual media distribution strategy.

The January 2, 2007 issue of Consumer Electronics Daily reported:

Sony Computer Entertainment is continuing a dual distribution strategy with 1080p game Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. The latest in Sony's racing game series debuted in Japan last month as a packaged Blu-ray disc and as a downloadable game available via the PlayStation Network. Each version was expected to cost about $40 in Japan, an SCE America spokesman said while demonstrating the game for media in New York City last month. The title is expected this spring in the U.S. and Europe under the same dual strategy, he said, but pricing wasn't finalized for those markets, he told us. The company tested dual distribution with 720p PS3 game Warhawk. But Sony also tested a dual pricing strategy on that release, the spokesman said, noting that the company offered the game as a packaged Blu-ray disc bundled with a Jabra Bluetooth headset itself valued at about $38 for $59.99, while the downloadable version minus headset cost only $39.99. The company was pleased with the performance of each version of that title, the spokesman said, offering no sales specifics.

I'm not happy about Wipeout HD
I have had my PS3 for about 3 months now and I still could not find a game I wanted (I use my PS3 for Bluray movies only so far).
But when I heard about Wipeout HD I was like: Yes, this will be my first game purchased because an ultra smooth race in 1080p is my idea of true HD games.
But now I know I can't buy that game as it won't come out on Bluray, but only by download which is not my cup of tea ...

Have you really not tried downloading ANYthing yet? I highly recommend at least trying one of the 6-10 dollar games. Well now that I think about it, have you downloaded demo's? Just think of it as a really big/long demo. Having games right there waiting for me on my hard drive is amazing. I couldnt recommend it more.

WipEout HD might not come out on Blu-ray, but the real next game in the series will.

WipEout HD is just a taste of things to come.

WipEout is the first game I fell in love with on the original Playstation. Maybe it's because it's the only racing game that I've ever been good at.
