I've skipped through the new MoC UHD (encoded by David M), and it feels like it's much, much better looking than the other new 4K restored releases (criterion/French edition etc). It's graded closer to the 2018 Blu, I think.

When direct comparisons go up i'll probably be wrong, but looks like Eureka! have done a great job.

I watched the 4K last night. My first viewing of this was on the Criterion Channel and their master was a mess (this was prior to their BD release based on the 4K master, so I assume their streaming version got a bump too) and there were frequent dark scenes that were a blocky nightmare and it was sometimes hard to tell what was even going on.
The Eureka release is fantastic by comparison. I can't say how it is 'meant' to look, but I had no complaints and it was a much more enjoyable experience.

And to continue to tease me with one of my most wanted releases, the Tom Mes video essay has clips from Sweet Home in it. They're clearly not remastered, but I can't remember seeing an extra where anyone has had permission to use footage from that before, and I immediately got a bit excited at the prospect of something happening behind the scenes to unblock the old Toho/Kurosawa/Itami rift on this. The essay mentions the falling out they had, and that Itami forced through a final cut against Kurosawa's wishes. Maybe time has healed some wounds (er, obviously not Itami's) and Kurosawa is interested in pushing for a release now his back catalogue has been getting more attention. I can dream.
