Miyazaki has some bad example for subtitles (eg using dubtitles like in Mononoke). I know just enough Japanese for it to stand out that they are wrong.
So long as I can get subtitles, and they aren't borked (like the original US release of Innocence on DVD, and some of the blu ray releases of it - I get angry just thinking of how bad the UK Manga Innocence subtitles were), I'm happy. Anyone who wants to watch the dub, I'm happy when they have the option to do so as well. I don't think having just one or the other benefits anyone, but if no-one has paid for a dub to be made, it does happen. I wish there were easy options to multiplex missing streams into media - like a player that would do it, for a language track or a missing subtitle for a dick playback (or even a streamed title) |

The English dub of the original GITS starts with incorrect dialogue right off the bat, with the Major saying "Must be a loose wire" instead of what she should be saying: "It's that time of the month." The dub is rather dumbed down.

Yeah, crushed shadows in the trailer have me worried. The image is a bit more contrasty and scrubbed.
I'll be really pissed if they didn't fix shadows on UHD. ![]() At the moment it looks like they took the BD master, upscaled and DNR'ed it a bit, plus pushed contrast even further. |

Could also be an HDR->SDR conversion gone wonky, or they may very well just be using footage from the current master "spruced up" for a new trailer. Every studio has been doing that for 4K releases; the marketing department probably just works with what they're given.

Definitely looks fun. I wonder if the source was ever actually very grainy to begin with. Maybe the grain is fine enough that a scaling algorithm could near-completely minimize it when brought down to 1080p. Either way I'm excited! ![]() |

I just hope the trailer isn't reflective of the actual UHD master. To be honest, I always thought that BD master was great overall, except for a few crushed scenes. So my only wish is fixed shadows. Last edited by OutOfBoose; 03-23-2018 at 07:03 PM. |

[edit] Oh nevermind, just watched on my PC and yeah it's completely borked. OLED phone displays are waaaaaaay too vibrant and contrasty. Looks like the old master TBH. Last edited by Vangeli; 03-23-2018 at 08:16 PM. |

Still, I've got a nice edition of the current 1080p transfer with JPN 5.1 audio and a tweaked subtitle track that can always be reverted to, should the 4K be a bust, but I won't lie and say that I don't like the look of that trailer because it looks rather tasty to me. |

Sure, HDR screen "lits up" shadow areas, so if there's any detail, it's easier to see it, unlike on a relatively dim SDR screen. But if details are crushed, like on the current BD master, HDR screen won't reveal anything either.
While it looks a bit more punchy due to higher contrast, and tiny bit more colorful, I don't like that they got rid of filmic texture. Reminds of all those anime rips, when authors hated even hint of grain. And modern digital anime. |

Ah. Apparently yesasia are NOT customs friendly any more. But for more or less the exact same price as that, £84-ish at current conversion rates, the amazon.jp order includes a customs fees deposit.

I'm waiting for proofs, of course. But let's not deny a number of trailers for previous releases were indicative of the actual quality. I'm keeping that in mind and not rushing to pre-order.
