I assume the new film (which I’m calling H40) will also be released to 4K UHD if it does well at the box office. It’s a direct sequel to this, so it should make a good double feature.

Universal appear to have the rights to the new movie, so if they can justify a UHD release for 50 Shades then a UHD for H40 (nice) is a given.

I think it’s almost guaranteed the sequels will eventually be released on 4K UHD. I think the Halloween films have been released on every format since VHS with the exception of the short lived HD DVD.

H4, H5, H20, and Resurrection would absolutely all need new scans before they could ever hope to see 4K UHD. H6 too probably, at least the theatrical cut, but the 2014 scan of the Producer’s Cut is probably fine.

And yeah, Universal has the franchise back with the new film.

I don’t think the Producer’s Cut was scanned in at 4K, so it would need a new 4K scan too. I still buy Blu-ray, so I’ll definitely be picking up the Scream Factory releases of H ll and H lll.

I don't think any current master for H6 would be "suitable" for UHD. The presentation of the PC on Blu-ray was a revelation considering it was only ever available through poor-quality bootlegs before but it's still not a great-looking presentation and I think seeing it in 4K with HDR would just accentuate its flaws.

Granted it appears older HD masters have just been dolled up and repurposed for UHD so what's suitable is definitely subjective even though that practice damages the reputation of UHD, just like it did Blu-ray when studios were releasing magenta-pushed telecines created for older home video formats designed to be viewed on different technology.

Halloween 4K restoration at FrightFest
Quote:
Two extra films have been added to the record-breaking 2018 line-up: PIMPED is director David Barker’s modern transgressive erotic thriller, an Hitchcocktail of elevated suspense and shock in the revered style of Brian De Palma, And If you’ve never seen John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN on the big screen, now’s your best chance. The inclusion of this 4K restoration needs no explanation in anticipation of a new Michael Myers slasher being released in October. Check screening details on the FrightFest website.

Ahead of single tickets going on sale from Sat 21st July, we’re thrilled to announce our current slate of guests, which includes Poldark star Aidan Turner, who will be with his co-star Caitlin Fitzgerald, director Robert Krzykowski and composer Joe Kraemer for THE MAN WHO KILLED HITLER AND THEN THE BIGFOOT.

Leading ladies shine this year. Joining THE RANGER director Jenn Wexler on opening night is The Transfiguration star Chloe Levine. Also delighting audiences are Brittany Allan (It Stains The Sands Red and Jigsaw), attending with director Colin Minihan to support WHAT KEEPS YOU ALIVE. With the former she will be united with Italian composer extraordinaire Fabio Frizzi and with the latter by her Heroes co-star Brea Grant. Also returning is THE CLEANING LADY producer and Goddess of Love star Alexis Kendra.

This year there are more International directors attending than ever before. Acclaimed music video and film director Joseph Kahn (Detention, Torque) joins us for BODIED, RKSS personnel François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell will be rocking in for SUMMER OF 84 and UPGRADE director Leigh Whannell, the creator of SAW and INSIDIOUS, will light up FrightFest’s Saturday night.

Homegrown talent will be present in abundance this year. No idea which release the 35th Anniversary Blu-ray uses. But for it anniversary Halloween was restored and overseen by the DP.

Definitely going to pick this one up, I never even got around to upgrading it to BD (too many faulty local releases floating around and the later non-botched ones were overpriced).

Will happily pick this up. I hope the first sequel will also get the UHD treatment.
The first sequel is getting a 4K remaster with a steelbook.

No surprise. It's the 40th anniversary. A new movie is coming out this fall. It's a direct sequel to the original. And the rights are owned by Lionsgate who are definitely not hesitant to release catalog titles.

Honestly, the 35th ann BD was good, but the color looked a little too drained to me. Let's see what this looks like with HDR and wide color gamut presumably with yet another round of new color timing.

I personally really enjoyed the 35th anniversary remaster. Quite a bit.

I know that in the past people have complained about the colors on each release--but a lot of it, IMHO, has to do with the fact that they shot the film in a Californian suburb. It's hard to replicate that 'fall' effect (something the new film actually does better than Carpenter's, aesthetically) during a summer shoot, with a tight budget on top of that.

If the UHD is just a more fine-tuned version of the 35th remaster, I will be extremely happy.

Yeah, I enjoyed the 35th anniversary Blu. The leaves could have used a bit of Orange in them, but the dreary grey sky made it look like a crisp, cool, Halloween day. Plus, all the fine detail in PQ I thought looked fantastic. Looking forward to the 4K release.

As with 2001 and Alien I'm not really all that concerned about what form the grading takes any more (egregious errors notwithstanding) because it's changed so much over the years, just as long as the main filmatic goodness is allowed to shine through sans any "grain management" then I'm good.

I definitely agree with you there. The 35th anniversary was one of the few BDs I felt actually was worthy of a double dip and it didn't hurt that I only paid $8 for it. : )

Anyways, I am very excited for this. I won't say it is a day 1 despite being in my top 3 horror films only because the 35th anniversary BD is that good to me.
