I rented the BD at Redbox -- I think HDR would've helped what is a dark picture, but I still thought it looked good. The film itself was a trifle, but fun for an evening. I thought Jodie Foster was terrific, and I loved her relationship with Dave Bautista. Worth a watch, but a one-and-done for me.

Watched this last night and surprisingly enjoyed the film a lot more than I though I was going to. With that being said, the transfer is kind of disappointing. Some shots are drowned out with grain and the lack of HDR is a bummer. While watching this I couldn’t help but to notice certain shots that would of looked great in HDR. I wonder what makes studios put out 4K transfers without HDR on disk? Seems like a rarity, but it seems to happen every once in a while.

I ordered the US version the other day as seemed the UK release with HDR has been pulled from all websites. Have I made a mistake on this one?

Point being: For some the Concorde release may not be an alternative. I'm also not really happy with Concorde's Howard's End release for the same reason and avoid them whenever I can. |

Just watched the German UHD disc from Concorde. It looks really beautiful. This is definitely the one to get if you're interested, because, IMO, HDR is definitely the most important part of this visual presentation. The movie takes place almost entirely at night and is generally pretty dark, and the HDR brings everything to life. The LA cityscape shots, the fire, the explosions, the screens, the gadgets - it all has a terrific, vivid "pop" and I can't imagine the SDR US release even comes close.

As for the movie, YMMV obviously, but I loved it. It has the kind of world-building and character development I feel like I almost never see anymore. No text scrolls, no VO exposition dumps - events just naturally roll and relationships and histories reveal themselves organically. Drew Pearce does a great job with the pacing and simmering tension; you definitely feel it all boiling up throughout. The casting is inspired and I thought everyone excelled in their roles. Great to see Jodie Foster doing something out there like this; she really throws herself into the character. My only complaint is that the ending felt a little abrupt and a couple of the climactic action scenes seemed...not rushed, but just not as extended and satisfying as I would have liked. I would have been totally fine with another 10-15 minutes at the end. But leaving me wanting more isn't exactly a bad thing! If you're interested in seeing the movie, I'd highly recommend skipping the US release and importing this one. I'm very glad I did. |
