He loves it - but I can't be the only one to whom that comparison shows how much EE the Kino has?

Despite the reviewers obvious eagerness to shower the Kino release with praise (note the "two extensive extras" comment), nothing so far suggests that this was a new 4K remaster. They used the same SC transfer with only a contrast bump to differentiate the two.

Let’s hope the audio is pitched correctly...

Different scratch marks and slightly different framing between the two, and a significant difference in clarity (apart from any contrast boost).

Worrisome, but in-motion will tell.

Not significant enough for a double-dip. And the "books on tape" commentary is not a selling point for me either.

The TIM LUCAS commentary IS the selling point

I don’t own any other release for the film, so the commentary is icing on the cake. Can’t wait. Have to wait a bit... the Criterion sales are killing me

Man, there are a LOT of scratches and dirt marks and places where the picture has interference. It is sharper than the DVD from Anchor Bay, but I don't know if it is better. The long scratch down the middle of the frame comes and goes so often in the first. Minutes, it may as well be a new ghost. Color me very disappointed, as this is One of my favorite horror films of all time.

Got this for the Lucas commentary, if nothing else. I usually don't bother with commentaries but his are the exception. Pretty much anything by him is an automatic purchase for me.

Absolutely forgot I pre-ordered this, so it was a nice surprise when it turned up randomly yesterday! And Amazon even refunded me a mighty ten cents difference from the pre-order price :P

The comparison of screenshots having subtitles on the Beaver review, the pinstripe pattern of the man's shirt clearly seen in the SC transfer is completely mangled on the Kino release, possibly on account of excessive sharpening.

...Which one? I don't see anything "completely mangled" at all. Sometimes I wonder if it's a curse or a blessing I miss so much.

SC release shot
Kino release shot

On the first one you can clearly see the pinstripe pattern on the collar. Kino shot, it gets messed up. That's how it looks to me.

The audio is high pitched and extremely harsh. The film is full of distracting scratches and the frame bounces around from time to time. Just another typical release from Kino.

I would hardly call that completely mangled.

Well the Kino has the better focus and contrast on my laptop.
Gotta really see it in motion on my setup to do a proper comparison.

For those unsure if this film qualifies as horror this quote from Wiki might help.

"...In the early 2010s, Time Out conducted a poll with several authors, directors, actors and critics who have worked within the horror genre to vote for their top horror films. Dead of Night placed at number 35 on their top 100 list. Director Martin Scorsese placed Dead of Night on his list of the 11 scariest horror films of all time..." ~ Wiki

It does look a little sharp... but I think only in contrast to the other image which seems much softer. To be honest I didn't reply because I'm simply not an expert and prefer the look of the Kino in that comparison, and didn't know if that was a Wrong Opinion

Kino aren't going to stop the EE when it fools so many. It's not any sharper, it just looks it to the untrained eye. All I see is ringing in those caps. It's unpleasantly heavy handed "enhancement".

The untrained eye, give me a break. Let me guess, you’ve taken a correspondence course on video processing from the comfort of your sofa.
