Another highly positive review of Severin's efforts from Rock! Shock! Pop!

http://www.rockshockpop.com/forums/c...Blu-ray-Review

If I didn't already have the Screenbound, I'd be all over this. The included CD is almost enough incentive on it's own to make me want to double dip.

Dude, it's a Black Friday sale exclusive limited to three thousand copies, you're telling me they commissioned a completely separate 4K restoration despite the fact one was already there waiting for them to simply license? How much money do you think they've thrown at this release?

Read the reviews and decided to order both Blood on Satan's Claw and The Beast in the Cellar.

I have had the Screenbound release on my wishlist since it was released, but there you go ...

What nobody seem to have mentioned is that the Severing release, unlike the Screenbound BD, appear to include English subtitles. Though to be honest, given Severin's recent track record with subtitles, I am not certain whether that is a good thing or not.

Anyway, I liked the covers, the slip and the inclusion of the CD. By several accounts the transfer appears identical to the Screenbound release, and the extras are almost the same (with some exclusives on either release).

As for Severin's claim that this and The Beast in the Cellar only will be available for sale during the BF sale - didn't they say something similar with Viy and then ended up changing it 'due to popular demand'?

I have a hard time believing they will not release a standard edition sometime next year if sales are good on it.

On the other hand, there never was a standard edition of Combat Shock, so who knows?

I am not taking any chances this time at least.

Regarding Viy, I’m sure Severin made it clear from the start that it would be available during their sale in a limited edition and then available in a standard edition ‘later on’. I remember not wanting to wait for the standard edition and plumped for the ltd edition. In the case of Claw and Cellar they’ve stated there would be no other edition other than the Black Friday units. But, as you say, who knows?

They said the same about Jack The Ripper. Though, it did take them a long while to release 2 of the 3 cuts, and the 3rd I think is still unreleased by them.

Ah okay, I misremembered then. Thanks for the correction!

Come to think of it, you must be right, because I am quite certain I would have forked over the cash for the limited edition of Viy, had they said it was my only chance to buy it, even though I am normally rather reluctant to pre-order anything from Severin.

The main difference why I took the chance this time and not with Viy, though, is that this time around there were reviews up for both Beast and Blood at the time they went for sale. Good marketing strategy by Severin, I presume.

Okay, just tell me where. The Rock! Shock! Pop! review and the Mondo Digital review neither confirm or deny what you're saying.

I don't know how much money Severin might have invested on this crazy Black Friday sale, but I do know this: Rock! Shock! Pop! review included in their review this statement:

"The picture quality here is quite strong, although print damage shows up throughout. It’s mostly minor, small white specks and what have you, but there are occasionally some vertical scratches that go from top to bottom."

I watched my Screenbound blu-ray very closely last night and there is absolutely NO print damage of any kind. So how would you explain this?

If this is the same 4K restoration, then somehow, Severin once again, screwed-up completely; either way, it goes back to my original post--Severin is producing sub-standard Blu-rays.

The Mondo Digital review doesn't say that. It only says "and appears to be identical between the two" That's no evidence. Furthermore, I read the : Rock! Shock! Pop! review which said:

"The picture quality here is quite strong, although print damage shows up throughout. It’s mostly minor, small white specks and what have you, but there are occasionally some vertical scratches that go from top to bottom."

It's either not the same transfer, or if so, Severin (as usual) screwed up badly.

US buyers would be remiss to skip it, especially since it's not coming back again after BF.

I appreciate and respect John Lyons comments. Thank you, BarnDoor, for bringing it to my attention. We all have our opinions on in what we see on the screen.

Anyway, I think this Severin Black Friday sale is crazy. They want or expect to sell 3000 units during this period and then it's unavailable?? The Screenbound U.K. version was released in June of 2019 at 4000 units and it's still in stock at Amazon.co.uk.

It seems you are mixing up terms here.

Severin using the same 4K transfer does not mean they are necessarily using the same restoration.

Presumably Screenbound and Severing got the raw scan data, and each have done their own restoration work and encoding.

If Severin's version shows white specks and print damage where Screenbound's version does not, it just implies Severin did not do the same level of restoration work as Screenbound.

I don't seen how this means 'Severin screwed up badly' though, as all reviews so far say Severin's disc looks great.

Restoration work comes with risks (picture details have been known to suddenly go missing), and therefore can be an art of restriction.

If white specks triggers you, just stay with the Screenbound release.

The third cut actually just came out on blu-ray. IIRC it was only on DVD in the limited edition?

They are giving it away as a free bonus to anyone who purchases for over $30 in the sale (or you can purchase it for $12).

You know I really don't want to bash Severin I mean I really like the company but when you read stuff about print damage and white specks it just makes you think "why?" Now could it have been a review discs, that wasn't restored properly?

Well thanks Mr. Thomsen. Your post has cleared things up for me when others didn't. And I will stick with my Screenbound release.

Well this thread fizzled out pretty damn quick with the blu's price point.

If nothing else it will be interesting to see how the disc stacks up once it the hands of a few knowledgable people with nice home theatre setups.

I'm kicking myself for missing this - does anyone think it will be available later on? I'm not too familiar with Severin Films. Yet.

They say no, but I suspect that any unsold copies will be available from them at any conventions or screenings where they have a booth/set up a merch table.
