This film deserved some love and affection, but got none.

I couldn’t buy a ticket to see this movie quick enough. I enjoyed it, but I also didn’t love it. Hated the CGI in it, and the plugged in American characters…but did appreciate the obvious details to plug it in with Carpenter’s movie.

Personally, I’m 50\50 with this movie, but I don’t view it as the train wreck it could have been. It’s entertaining enough, although I wish it was a couple of nudges better. At the end of the day, I liked it enough to want an upgrade, and also hope that this universe is worth another movie.

However, I do hope another movie happens with a massive degree of love for Carpenter’s movie. Like, more love than the prequel exhibited.

I’ve enjoyed all of the adaptations of Campbell’s story. I’ve never understood the hatred heaped on this one. All of the cast was good, particularly Winstead.

I think this prequel is very good. Aside from some very wonky cgi it has a nice sense of dread throughout. Very similar to the '82 TheThing. It's a very good effort and certainly deserves a 4k upgrade.

I pretty much agree with your assessment of the movie. I do also think it would have played better if Winstead's character played the only American in the cast. I don't know how she does with accents if they wanted her to play a Brit, for instance. Even Edgerton's character was American if I'm not mistaken, and the dude is Australian in actuality. He could have played the role with his normal accent.

I still don't understand why this movie bombed as colossally as it did even at the box office. The critics skewered it, but even Carpenter's original film wasn't received well by a lot of them. It had mixed reviews, and the ones that didn't like it were brutally harsh. So the audience shouldn't have let the negative reviews stop them from seeing this movie in a theater, and yet, nobody went to see it. If I'm remembering correctly I saw it on a Saturday night, and i was one of just three people in the theater overall. It was truly pathetic.

So if people wanted to see more films produced stemming from this IP, ignoring it wasn't the way to go and was just lame.

The other Americans did seem like NPCs, the girl should have been the only one

Hehe…I believe that this movie was a few ridiculous decisions from being amazing. IMO, it was a dumbass noobie producer that wanted to sell the project (over sell an artistic endeavor).
