saw today and i think a lot of younger people who love Cage ironically for his more recent over the top roles are not gonna like this…
i thought it was terrific and a surprisingly subversive drama. would make a great double bill with the recent movie The Truffle Hunters |

Not a bad film.
While I can't help but feel the pacing for this movie is a little too slow, I enjoyed it. It's definitely not one of Nic Cage's better films, but it isn't one of his worst at all. Nic had some great moments and the standout part was actually with the standout supporting character: the Chef that Nic Cage's character meets. Such a hidden gem of a scene in this movie, fantasticly done and acted. Despite it having some great moments, it had some rather poor ones too. However the movie does nicely piece together a backstory without too much exposition at all or flashbacks. I liked that, really made it feel more layered. Overall, I'd give it 3/5. |

Like kylor above, I also feel a bit MOR on this. Additional viewings might deepen my appreciation of a film, but not sure if I'll be wanting to revisit it so often. What I liked most about the story is that the pig lost in question actually taps into deeper issues Cage's character is having than just his livelihood threatened.
Is it just me or did anyone else get Edward Norton vibes from the way Alex Wolff played his character? |

A Nicolas Cage film that actually didn't premiere in Walmart's DVD bin? I am shocked. My theatre is actually playing it too.
NEON’s truffle hunter-bent-on-revenge feature Pig, starring Nicolas Cage and Alex Wolff, posted an estimated $372K yesterday, on its way to a $1M 3-day in the top 10 from 550 theaters for a $1,818 per theater average. Pic is on a traditional 42-day window, and I hear it posted good results in NY, LA, Chicago, San Francisco and Portland Oregon. |

I was split with Pig. Cage's subdued and searing acting is the film's highlight, and it tugs at the heartstrings when it should but I'm at odds with some of the narrative and visual choices. Cage's character, Robin, is setup with a kind of illusive and dark manner, even the film's poster plays him up as a man with a seamy underside, but as the layers peel back he amounts to nothing more than just a cook who turned to living as a recluse. He, and his revenge, don't result to anything tense or worthwhile. Perhaps that's the point, and maybe the misleading marketing material still has its hooks in me, but this film felt like it tried to have two kind of movies. A dark revenge movie with a seamy underground of characters, and an intimate character drama.

Had a great porchetta sandwich before heading to the local multiplex to enjoy some more Pig.
This is probably the most quirky Portland-lensed movie since Gus Van Sant's Drugstore Cowboy... though probably not quite as good. It's still worth watching. A lot of it is quite dark-looking and unfortunately this becomes an issue since many theaters, perhaps due to having fewer customers these days, are using less foot-candles than they should (and have, under different circumstances). I might take another look when it becomes available for home viewing. |
