The audio was restored as well when they did the 4K. They used a 70mm printmaster, as I think they did on the previous mix(es), so it's not going to fundamentally differ in terms of what goes where but it's 16-bit while the old one was 24-bit. Could that affect it?

As well as listing the movie, it might be useful to list what the original sound format was and how it's represented.
E.g. PREDATOR Theatrical: 35mm: Dolby Stereo 4.0; 70mm: 5.1 UHD: DTS-HD MA 4.0; DTS-HD MA 5.1 Bolded being original mixes. |

As Peter alluded to, the mono surround was given an occasional mild directional split surround enhancement for 5.1. But aside from that technically it's pretty faithful to the OG 70mm mix. |

Appreciating all these responses re: Close Encounters. So picking through all the info in the previous posts... and please excuse my ignorance... does it belong on the "original audio" list? And if so... does the older Blu-ray NOT qualify, or are they derived from the same source, as Geoff alluded to, thus making them BOTH "original audio"?
Still wondering about E.T. also. I'd never heard anywhere else that the UHD contains the original audio, yet it's on this list. Anyone know? Sincere thanks to all the audio experts out there! |

Just an example or the actual? Because Predator's 70MM mix was 4.2 - so like Close Encounters it's a slight upmix.

So I guess the UHD's 5.1 isn't the original 70mm audio, but something close. I would have the listing read, thus: PREDATOR Theatrical: 35mm: Dolby Stereo 4.0; 70mm: 4.2 UHD: DTS-HD MA 4.0; DTS-HD MA 5.1 Better? |

Still counts for me.
Just thought it would be nice to have all the relevant info in one place and allow for user corrections/clarification. |

The Bridge On The River Kwai UHD has elements of the original mono.
Originally released in mono, the films was re-released in 1991 on 70mm in 6 tracks stereo with added effects. For the first DVD release, Chace created a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, combining elements from the original 1957 mix and the 1991 restoration. So DTS HD-MA 5.1, that is present on the UHD, contains elements of the original mono. Not sure if that counts, but there you go. |

The Bridge On The River Kwai is Cinemascope, so the original audio should be also in 4-Track Stereo?

Yes, but the AC-3 codec is much more efficient - think MPEG2 vs. AVC except for audio (DD+ even more so). There's a reason they use it for streaming and other formats.
