Just watched this edition tonight and it's the best it has ever looked. Watching all of the supplemental material from the original filming, man, Gael was a bit difficult to work with. Watching the cast Zoom retrospective was awesome, too.

Wow, Lionsgate really threw the 4K HDR straight to digital. I wonder if they will release a 4K Blu-ray? Apple TV has it in Dolby Vision.

Criterion loses yet again. Getting really sick of this shit. I've lost count of how many times this has happened in the past year. whether another disc or digital.

I've watched the Apple TV 4K version and Criterion side by side and it looks like Criterion has a bit more detail, but the 4K in Dolby Vision looks a lot more natural and less overexposed in several scenes. Several scenes where shadow detail is better. Either way, it's really sad they didn't make a 4K disc because a 4K disc would blow both the current disc and Apple 4K version away.

If you see from a different angle, all 3 parts are also about dogs, a connection among the 3 stories.

In the first part, a dog turns into a killing machine. Reaches the point of near-death

In the second part, a dog falls into a hole in the floor. There are big rats in that below the floor space too. Would it be rescued? (so interesting from that angle unless you only viewed it as the model's story)

In the third part, the killing machine resurfaces from a near-death experience to kill other pet dogs in the house. Would the dog lover kill this dog or still accept it as, at the end of the day, it is an animal doing what it is trained for?

The title of the film also has a dog connection

You really just bumped this thread to drop a pointless, kindergarten level reply to a post that was made over 8 months ago.

Assume the Criterion will go OOP now that MUBI has global rights (assume Lionsgate had a 25 year deal before the rights reverting)

Kind of an awkward situation considering Criterion helped create the 4K restoration:

Quote:
The restoration was carried out by the Criterion Collection, Estudio Mexico Films, and Altavista Films, with colour supervision by Iñárritu and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and a new 5.1 surround sound mix by Jon Taylor at NBCUniverseal StudioPost.
