Without Criterion, this wouldn’t even get a physical release. So it was never gonna get a UHD, anyway. They aren’t giving it to them because they suddenly understand the demand for physical media. It’s because they can say it’s in the collection.

I really enjoyed this movie and would love to add to my collection but until Criterion steps into 2020 and starts releasing 4K UHD discs and not stay in 2006 and only releasing blu-ray then my 50 - 60 bucks which will be the price on it will stay in my pocket

Agreed.

Not that there isn't plenty of room for healthy criticism, but the utterly disdainful attitude - treating Criterion like a pest you wish would just go away - is bizarre.

Hmm, either own what surely be a gorgeous HD release of a movie you "really enjoyed" or don't out of spite...how wise and noble of you.

Aw well, more for us!

Ah yes, the traditional whining about 4k every time Criterion comes up. Would the world even continue to spin on its axis if this ever failed to occur?

As much as I would love a 4K disc, no way am I passing on a Criterion of this amazing film. I was going to watch again soon on Netflix but will wait for this release instead.

Can't wait for this and Marriage Story. Might even be day 1 pickups.

Heavens Gate is on 1 disc. So the Irishman should easily fit onto 1 disc as well

Are you talking about the movie itself being split into two discs, or two discs as in 1 disc for the movie and 1 disc for the extras? The movie itself will definitely be on one disc. It's 17 minutes shorter than Lawrence of Arabia, so there shouldn't be any problems. And it's not grainy, so it won't suffer from Criterion's usual compression issues.

The Irishman is going to be the litmus test for whether or not Criterion will ever go 4K. If The Irishman doesn't get a 4K release, I think it's pretty safe to say it'll NEVER happen. Netflix didn't say anything other than Criterion will be releasing these titles. The Irishman is the biggest, most mainstream title they've announced in a decade. So there's a chance, we might get lucky. But if they don't do it for this. It's game over. My 2 cents anyhow.

Didn't Criterion respond to the 4K question last year at some point, and didn't they say something like 4K is coming?

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if this was the title they entered into the 4K arena with. If not, no big deal. I'm happy Criterion is getting the opportunity to do the disc, and love that more independent distributors like them are picking up the slack where the studios haven't. Criterion, Shout!, Kino, Arrow; love all of them.

Criterion doing 4K? That'll be the day.

The Irishman on Blu will perfectly fits right beside Roma BR, on that Oscar shelf.

Nice, like Roma this should be a safe bet for a U.K. release too. I’ll hold off watching until the blu. A couple of friends who have seen it have been disappointed, but they are the sort who are used to modern Hollywood style narratives and won’t watch anything pre 1984, so I’m still going in with high hopes.

I just googled Criterion 4K, and this showed up on other forums.

Watch for Criterion's first 4K title to be announced soon (Spine #1001+) – TBA Late 2019"

Not sure of it's origin; Criterion's Twitter account perhaps? Regardless, I recall this announcement.

If Criterion don’t release this in 4K then I wouldn’t expect them to go 4K at all in the future. This would be the perfect title to be their 1st 4K release.

Well I'm sure that as posters on a forum for physical media, we are all at least glad someone will be coming along to give it a home disc release. But it doesn't change the fact this would be a great 4K opportunity and Criterion may put a swift stop to any hope of ever owning Irishman on a home 4K disc.

I'm ambivalent here, erring more on the side of "yeah, fair enough, at least it gets a release" given it's a Netflix movie. But in other instances Criterion are becoming pests tbh.
