While unlikely at this point in time, I still think that a complete cancellation of the ceremony remains in the cards if these shutdowns continue and the number of films released this year continues to dwindle, especially if we see a new outbreak in the Fall. Time will tell but we could end up with a ceremony in 2022 that folds in any films released in 2020 as eligible for consideration along with films released in 2021. Interestingly, the Academy folded in two years worth of films into one ceremony one time in its history and that was the first ceremony that took place in 1929. They considered films released in 1927 and 1928 as eligible for those first awards.

The egos, the narcissism, the faux-meritocracy, incessant ad breaks.

I’ve watched it my whole life, and as an annual celebration of cinema it’s fine (especially with a host who has a healthy dose of cynicism), but pretending the trophies actually mean anything, beyond marketability, exposes a certain detachment from reality that’s frankly embarrassing.

Taking a break for year from the whole awards season is healthy for everyone.

I’d say the same for sports as well.

Late March, or April? When it comes to changing the February 28 date for the 2021 Oscars, the question is no longer if, but when. That will be determined at the Academy Board of Governors’ Zoom meeting on Thursday, June 11.

Academy Returns to Firm 10 Best Picture Nominees

Quote:
A new phase has begun, and in terms of the Oscar race itself includes going back to a set number of 10 Best Picture nominees , replacing the current eligibility rule that allows for five up to ten nominees. This does not apply to the upcoming 93rd Academy Awards (2020 release year) but will take effect for the 94th Oscars (2021) and into the future. The Academy will also create a quarterly viewing process through their streaming site starting also with the 94th Oscars that is designed to “level the playing field” and make all films easier to see year round rather than in the usual crunch of “awards season”.

The fluctuating number was always an odd one, like it sort of removed the competition out of it. Like “sure we could have ten worthwhile films, but we feel only seven this year are worth it so tough luck to the other three potential nominees”.

Obviously this will go on for two years until they come across a film they would have preferred leaving out of the nominations.

Glad they are going back to 10 nominees, I always preferred that system and the current one has I believe been 8 or 9 nominees every year so not that much different. I understand not doing it this year, cause even if they have an Oscars, I can’t help but feel like the competition would be extremely thin (I kinda hate that there would almost be an asterisk with any nomination or win, to mention The Invisible Man, sure it’s a pretty good movie but why should it get Oscar attention this year when it never would under normal circumstances).

So I guess this increases Sonic the Hedgehog’s chances for a BP nomination.

I watch it, but here are the things that bother me about it:

1) Too many categories. I know they have, like, a secondary Oscar ceremony for minor awards. They should demote about a half dozen from the main show to the secondary ceremony

2) Too many undeserving winners. These awards are not as pure as we are led to believe. Too many movies and actors won not by being the best, but simply by having the best lobbying team (the Harvey Weinstein years come to mind)

3) Too much sanctimony/virtue signaling from the assembled crowd. I don't need ultra millionaires to lecture me about how to live my life. They are talented artists, but they have no greater insight into human nature than anyone else.

You asked what things bother me and those are the things that bother me. However, they don't bother me so much that I choose not to watch the show. There are certainly some good parts, especially the fact that oftentimes the Oscars will introduce me to quality films which I had not considered watching before. In many ways, it's a 3+ hour commercial, but that's ok since it is a 3+ hour commercial for a medium I love.

Well, only 10 pictures came out in 2020, so I guess you may as well nominate them all....

After viewing Da 5 Bloods, this should be a huge contender for several awards.

Sadly you won’t be up for the award for perception this coming year.

There’s also way more than 10 titles this year so far if you include the streaming selections which ARE eligible for the upcoming ceremony due to the current circumstances.

I hope Delroy Lindo doesn't get forgotten come awards season. His performance in Da 5 Bloods is sensational.

There is a lot more to be concerned about other than which film is doing what.
IMO, the AMPAS has just crossed a very hard line:
"AMPAS To Implement New Inclusive Guidelines For Oscar Contenders"

Unless I am wrong, this is censorship through coercion.

I wouldn’t get to twisted over it, the BAFTA’s have implemented the same things and going from this years awards it’s impacted the actual outcome almost zero percent. People got so worked up over that on here and looking at the actual guidelines they posted, they set the goalposts so wide that it practically included every film that could be eligible for an award, it was more to save face than anything.
