His show is in decline when he has his three annoying friends on. The decline in hit counter may have something to do with emulated consoles like Retro Pie and Emulation Station being popular. You get to his game collection quantity for $180 with Retro Pie.

10. Were the interactive dvd menus nice? Yes, but it was also a gimmick to get eyeballs on the format and it’s been abandoned all together, not a format issue.

9. Dvds would often be release as barebones releases and then you’d have to pay more to get the collectors edition. No real difference now, cheaper barebones distributors and more expensive collectors labels

8. Dvds had plenty of bad cases, like the stupid ones with the cardboard flap instead of a regular case.

7. Dvds also use sleeves and other subprime ways of holding the discs. At least blus never really adopted flipper discs and blus are more durable than dvds

6. Really? Remote? Nothing to do with the format again.

5. Never seen an update message

4. He’s just completely wrong about everything he says

3. Again just ignorant to the facts

2. The one thing I agree on, I like the resume play feature on dvds but they are also present on some blu, this is still not a format issue but a manufacturer decision issue

1. I think there’s less trailers now than on dvds, and dvds could lock skipping too

James had his run as an online video innovator, but when it comes to anything really related to movies he had always been more of a hack. This video clearly shows his ignorance

Wow, 61 posts and counting in response to a guy I’ve never even heard of until this thread. Serious question: Is there a reason why I should be listening to this guy or care about what he thinks? Or is he just some dude with a camera? Does anyone here invest anything in his opinion and, if so, why? Not being snarky, just have no clue who he is or why he merits this thread.

This, plus someone who adores movie covers/posters.

I think the small public access channels of yesteryear were much more entertaining, and just better than 95% of these Youtube people that sit in front of piles of their junk, and preach.

And that is saying an awful lot

Well his annual income is around $5 million for his opinions on YouTube so unfortunately a lot of people have heard of him.

Won't comment too much about it, but Disney and Lionsgate are probably the worst offenders of Blu-ray ads or trailers for other movies. I think Disney has been better about it in recent years though. Also does anyone even use Bookmarks? Is it really hard for someone to forget where they where? Most Blu-ray players just continue where you left off.

Yeah, some Lionsgate discs have like 10 minutes of previews before the main menu. Thankfully, you can just push "disc menu" to get through them.

James has been on YouTube since its inception and has built up quite an audience with his Angry Video Game Nerd persona. He has a vast knowledge of old monster movies and film making itself. He is one of the most sincere dudes on the internet and is an avid collector. I believe he just doesn't want to rebuy his collection again and hasn't seen enough to merit it. He's also an extremely busy family man and has little time to watch much anymore. He got me into collecting and older horror like Hammer and 50s scifi. His solo content is awesome and AVGN is hilarious. I also disagree with the video almost in its entirety.

He’s old school pre 2010 internet video royalty. The first 100 eps of avgn are great, but he’s been pretty weak the past 5-10 years years. I’ve been watching since 2006ish, but when it comes to his views and talents with real movies I’ve never liked him.

Thanks for the info, everyone. For once, I am deliriously happy to be out of the loop. Not a judgment call on anyone else, but I literally don’t have time or patience for whatever “internet video royalty” is supposed to represent. I am either oblivious or just shut off a lot of the, for lack of a better phrase, Kardashian culture of dubious fame, but if others enjoy it, to each their own.

Forums like this seem different to me and I really love them because of the variety of perspectives and opinions. There are many more members here who I like and enthusiastically invest in with both attention and affection much more than I ever would a random YouTube guy or blogger. It’s just a question of preference. I enjoy hearing many voices as opposed to just one.

He’s right on many points here. The Blu-ray format has been a far more lazy effort than DVD. He hit the nail on the head about motion menus. Some of those old DVD menus were spectacular. The James Bond series comes to mind as an all time favorite for DVD menus.

His complaints for blu ray is ridiculous. Menu screens? The name? Bookmarks? Cry me a river.
Weird, there are no commercial interruptions on Prime, Netflix, Criterion Channel, even Hulu if you pay an extra whole $1 for no ads. You said "any" service, so automatically it appears you're just talking to be outraged.

Lazy effort from the studio, not the format itself. A lot of his so called "points" are eye rolling.

Most of those aren't even related to the format. Companies can still make great menus and add extras if they want to. I agree that system updates are not good but they have never prevented me from watching a movie. Maybe I have been lucky. Also I have always been able skip the trailers before the movie.

I actually really enjoy a lot of the content he produces, but still this might be his worst video. It's like he's coming up with illogical reasons why he doesn't like Blu-ray. He's complained in the past about have to pay Sony royalties for his releases, and I'm pretty sure that's probably what annoys him the most.

Whatever issues Blu-ray has, they are worth it to be able to enjoy a film with theater quality picture and sound. I'm very nostalgic about VHS and DVD too, but it doesn't hide the fact that they're inferior to Blu-ray in every way.

I think Blu-Ray menus are much better. You don't have to wait the animations between menus. Also I don't like when menus have clips from the movie. Still image is much better.
