That’s what I thought until I saw it and realized how little he took advantage of it. Good movie, but not a 70mm showcase, IMO.

While H8's framing and camerawork is very stagey I still love what anamorphic 70mm does for close-ups of faces, it gives them loads of detail and richness but is also more forgiving because it's not absolutely razor-sharp from corner to corner. H8 is no exception, I watched the mini series Netflix thingy and even in 1080p it looked gorgeous.

I'd prefer it to go to a company that does more with catalog releases. Paramount has only done 2 4k catalog releases this year (Pet Semetary & 13 Hours), with only 1 more announced.

By comparison, Lionsgate has done 7 catalog 4ks thus far, with 4 more announced for the remainder of the year.

Also when it comes to bluray, Lionsgate has pretty much gotten everything worthwhile on their catalog out (with a few exceptions), whereas Paramount is still missing stuff like The Two Jakes & Roman Holiday.

And then MGM for similar reasons, they don't really care much about anything that's not Bond.

All Paramount need is a good excuse to get something out there onto 4K e.g. Transformers, Tomb Raider, Mission Impossible, Jack Ryans. True enough their catalogue cup hasn't runneth over this year because they've had precious little to tie into but seeing as the "only 1 more announced" is a very old film that I thought I'd never, ever see on 4K disc then I'm happy to give them some extra leeway for that. If they got the Miramax catalogue then I don't think they'd just sit on it, they'd get to work remastering the Screams and whatnot (which I really would kill to get on remastered Blu, never mind UHD!).

Lionsgate have done some terrific work but they seem to have done a deal with the devil to be able to give so much stuff the double Dobly treatment and put out so many 100GB discs as well. It'll be one of the little everlasting ironies of 4K UHD that a studio with the worst catalogue gives their discs such good treatment (mastering issues aside, I mean in sheer technical terms of putting them onto disc) and at such a low price.

That's my most wanted one. Even at home, on a relatively small screen, close ups in the BD just seem massive. Hateful Eight might be my favorite QT anyway.

Didn't like the movie all that much the first time around but I dug that Netflix version a lot.

All great points, but somewhat ironically the problem with Paramount is that they don't do as many sequels and remakes as other studios, so less 4k cash in opportunities present themselves, compared to Lionsgate's name in a hat releases anyway. Upcoming I think there's just Top Gun: Maverick & Coming 2 America. They got other stuff like MI 7 & Without Remorse too, but the MIs & Jack Ryans are already on 4k so no tie-ins available there.

Dude, no other studio can compete with Lionsgate's famed "throwing darts at a board while blindfolded" policy of choosing what 4K titles to release! Most other studios are pretty much doing the same thing as Paramount when it comes to 4K disc i.e. seizing on their primo cash-in opportunities, it's just their lot that they've still got other franchises and remakes bubbling away (it always helps when you can buy a studio, like Disney did with Fox!).

At least if Alien and Die Hard were with Paramount we'd have gotten all the main franchise movies lumped onto disc at once, instead of just the first instalments only. I think something may yet happen with the TNG trek movies though to tie in with Picard (jeez, the ink's barely dry on the Viacom/CBS merger and they're already touting a Picard-themed combined TV ep/movie BD set!).

This is awesome news. IMHO this is Tarantino's best film just ahead of JB.

Oh believe me, I wasn't saying otherwise. No one can compete with Lionsgate giving direct to dvd cartoons a 4k release with Dolby vision & atmos (Hellboy animated).

Though I think Universal is certainly getting there, between Casino, Scarface, and their other upcoming titles.

Perhaps I treated Paramount too harshly compared to the likes of Fox & others, I hadn't really thought of it like that. It's been a slow year, so that's skewed my perception a little, but they've done a good job in previous years. I think you've convinced me.

Though I will say I still would prefer if Sony or Lionsgate gets the catalog.

I picked up Dogs, Pulp Fiction , Jackie and Django last week in the HMV sale and found a copy of the Hateful Eight in Poundland. Inglourious is the only one I don't have so roll on the UHD day one purchase.

I would wait six months, then import if no US date is announced. That's what I did with the German release of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Shame if this doesn't eventually get released in the States, as the international editions most probably would ditch the chapter titles and burned-in subs (for the non-english-speaking parts, of which there are plenty) in favor of player-generated ones.

I find it hard to believe there wouldn’t be a simultaneous US release.
