United Kingdom Have I Got News for You (comedy panel quiz show)

Have watched the first two editions of the spring series of Have I Got News for You, and I've enjoyed them. Considering the circumstances with you-know-what in the news, I think they've done well, and it has still been funny.

I love the fact that Paul Merton has a wall of films on disc - as he puts it, a collection of Mary Pickford films unrivalled throughout the British Isles - on the shelves behind him.

Last Friday night's new edition was as good (and as funny) as the first two of this year's spring series. This coming Friday night's new edition is presented by Pointless' Alexander Armstrong (one of those who has guest presented HIGNFY the most times, along with Jo Brand and probably one or two others).

For nearly the past week, there have been repeats of Pointless on. In the final round of one of them, earlier this week, one of the sub-categories was something along the words of 'Female members of the House of Lords since 2000'. I don't know if they were a pointless answer (Osman said there were over a hundred pointless answers in that sub-category), but I thought of the lady who was a guest panellist on an edition of HIGNFY several years ago (she was teamed up with Ian Hislop), Baroness Trumpington.

She was hilarious on that edition.

The first one with Steph McGovern was terrible. I think the one last week with Victoria Coren seems to have been much better edited and was more enjoyable as a result.

On the whole, I enjoyed the series from earlier this year. If there is a new series this autumn (usually they start in October), I'm wondering if they will film in the studio without an audience. Last Friday night's new edition of A Question of Sport was the first edition shot without a studio audience.

Going back in time, some of the moments on the show which have stood out for me:

- the late Baroness Trumpington on Ian's team (very funny lady)
- the Madame Tussauds imitator round where they had to guess who the famous person was
- Roy Hattersley being replaced by a tub of lard
- the Fruitcake or Loony round (the camera kept cutting to Nigel Farage, asking him to guess whether an MP was a fruitcake or loony)
- the clip they showed a few times, of Robert Kilroy-Silk on a gameshow saying "share or shaft?".

Read during this past weekend that there are going to be changes made to another long-running panel series, A Question of Sport. Host Sue Barker (who has hosted the series since replacing David Coleman over twenty years ago) and team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tuffnell are being replaced.

I also read that a few of the existing employees at the BBC are getting substantial pay rises, for example Zoe Ball - an increase of almost a million quid! Incredible - the BBC is usually crying poverty yet it can afford to pay obscene salaries.

British panel shows are the best.

HIGNFY, Mock The Week, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Would I Lie To You... the list is endless.

Have not seen a single, full editon of 8 out of 10 Cats (just bits of it), or 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. But I've heard very good things about both, especially the latter.

An hour long documentary about the show airs on BBC One tonight, called Have I Got 30 Years for You.

Following on from the above quoted post, the new series was due to start tonight, but due to the big news story today (Prince Phillip passing away), the BBC schedules have been changed. The second edition of the new series is scheduled to air next Friday. If I remember correctly, they film the show on a Thursday evening.

All those and the Last Leg are our top viewing every time we can find them. Too bad they are getting harder and harder to watch over here, copyright issues etc., not sure why these UK channels won't think about doing a huge UK joint subscription for out of country viewers. I'd rather pay for that then anything here in the US.

ETA: I do know a couple are on prime, but often it's not current or reliable.

And I totally forgot one of our favorites Taskmaster!!

I was looking at Radio Times earlier and the BBC are broadcasting the next episode on Friday. I suspect the cancelled one might get shown at the end of this series.

Read in today's 'i' newspaper about the large amount of complaints received by the BBC the past few days. There seems to be a fine line, where you understand it was a big news story, and with saying they went a bit far by changing the scheules for the various channels, and not sounding insensitive. Over the weekend, I've been checking for when certain programmes are going to be shown (some of which were repeats anyway).

Those sound like good theories above, about the first edition, showing it at the end of the new series (the second edition is being presented by actor Adrian Dunbar).

Yes, it's available on Sky catch-up (the extended version of the first edition of the new series).

I wonder if they edited it? On the Sky version of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver there's a very, very obvious cut from the rest of the world's version (you can find it uncut on youtube: it's a reference to Philip being the Queen's cousin).
