It seems that Dominic Noble of Lost in Adaptation doesn't like this series very much, and he had already ripped the two movies a new one!

Finished the season the other day and I more or less enjoyed it. Tried to just take it for what it was and not compare it to the books too heavily. For a young adult fantasy series that wants to be taken seriously, it's pretty good. My biggest gripe remains the same- it's just missing some of the lightness of the books. It takes itself too seriously and the whimsical, fun moments are glossed over too quickly, which makes the quick little attempts at genuine humor fall a little flat for me. Like, one of my favorite little details from the book was Grover eating tin cans as a snack. Fun, simple, makes sense, but also adds a lot of whimsy and fun to the character. Was reading that they filmed a scene of him eating tin cans but cut it because they didn't want kids to try eating cans themselves. Like...okay. I think most kids get that you can't eat tin cans and he's only doing it because he's half goat, but whatever (then again, in a post-Tide Pods world, never underestimate the stupidity of people looking for attention).

That said, it did pick up for me towards the end. I quite liked all the stuff in the Underworld- Volume or not, it looked appropriately pretty and atmospheric. Grover remains my favorite character, and even Annabeth started to win me over a bit in the end (even if I'm still not entirely sold on her acting). I watched the behind-the-scenes video after, and you see the kids acting like real kids and having fun and being goofy, and it just made me wonder where that energy was in the show? They act like they're all at least twice their age. I think Luke and Clarisse did a good job for their small roles, and I'm looking forward to getting more time with them in future seasons too.

I digress. It obviously knows what it's doing, since Rick Riordan is such a big part of the show as well, so I know the changes are intentional. It's not bad by any means, and I'm definitely tuned in for future seasons- the books just meant too much to me to not- but I would hope that it leans into the fun and silliness a bit. It had that fun, youthful energy that the earlier Harry Potter books had as well. Yeah, Percy knew a lot about the Gods and such, but seeing them integrated into modern society was still a bit ridiculous. Having Percy be too serious or too much of a know-it-all too early will make some of the later books feel a bit same-y.

According to Variety, they called a writers workshop for it to develop S2 ideas but it hasn't been officially renewed yet.

I got the "Complete Series" (even though it seems that's no longer complete now) for my Kindle and jumped to the second book to see what happens. Did the same thing after watching the first season of GoT when it was new.

Awesome news. I'm like 3/4 of the way through the book, should make a good season.

I agree with joshsquash. In the effort to distill/compress the plot down to a manageable timeframe, everything tends to get more serious, because it's the serious stuff that typically advances the plot. But these books are funny, so more of that please. With longer/more episodes, they may be able to manage it.
