I find it rather sad that FIM is seemingly the only great independent encoding house we've got.

That's kinda the point, SG: pretty much every other authoring house is an industrial scale 'set and forget' place that just shits out encodes with minimal care and attention. Some are still betterer than others as most of the main studios' authorers do a decent enough job, but some of the ones local to certain countries have a ways to go.

I wonder if it's just a case FIM are currently a bit Dorsia due to on the going events. Or it's to much of a logistical challenge SC outsourcing.

FiM can't do everything, sadly. I don't think it's a coincidence that this great run of encodes for SC's UHDs has been interrupted just when Arrow started to do UHD discs.

Maybe David M will fill us in eventually if possible.

I doubt he's at liberty to say, not that he'd have to kill us but that discussing the particulars of his clients in public is a no-no.

Amazon UK is shipping this to the U.S. now, ordered. It's a blind buy for me but I loved Army of Shadows so I'm pumped to see this.

I'm in Canada and it quoted me 19 pounds for shipping? I only had to pay 3 pounds in years past. I did not see any other shipping option.

Ever since covid and with major shipping delays, importing from Amazon UK they got rid of the cheaper and would only ship if you did the fastest option. The good thing is you can usually add additional blu-rays to your order and it only bumps shipping up a little bit but you get it way faster.

I know at least 3 very competent authoring houses just in France : VDM, Hiventy and Eclair. I doubt the UK and the US don't have at least that many considering they're much bigger markets than us.

If Hiventy were responsible for the authoring of Total Recall's UHD and not just the remastering then 'competent' is not the word I would use. They also did Red Heat and that's another bargain-bin UHD encode.

The encode of Total Recall is not from Hiventy. I can't say for Red Heat though. It could be Silverway, who are credited on some of Canal's BDs, but they're using a mixture of different authoring houses so it's hard to know exactly who did what.

In UHD, I believe they did the French releases of Parasite, Knives Out, Green Book and the 4 Bruce Lee movies, plus Le chant du loup.
On BD, if it hasn't changed, they're handling almost all catalogue releases from Pathé.

Pity that StudioCanal don't use them, then. SC are giving the continent's encoders a bad name.

The issue is that for the good authoring houses we have, we also have a ton of much worse ones, including one which is despite that used to do tons of encodes in France. Their encodes are easily recognizable though : if you saw a Blu-ray where the grain was OK 1 frame then awfully blocky the next ones than right again (poor GOP setting, I guess), that's them. They're claiming to have done 2500 BD encodes in France...

Funny you say that about the grain as that's EXACTLY the effect that plagues SC's Rambo 1-3 UHDs. Grain will look perfick in one frame and an outrageously blocky mess the next. Who is "they"?

Com'on Screen.
I don't know if they're doing UHDs though, but they're doing tons of BDs, especially for Elephant (I specify those because Elephant has a "Credits" section so they're explicitly mentioned).
