In the remake, there's a sense of dread everywhere. Everything is grimy and dirty and rundown while the locals are acting creepy right out of the gate. Now I'm not going to accuse a movie with a 25 minute rape scene of being a subtle movie, but compared to the remake? It totally is.
I getcha. I felt similarly about the Last House remake. If it wasn't for Deja Vu, I'd probably consider the remake the worst in the franchise (I don't dislike it, it's just kinda meh). But I do think that each film in the reboot trilogy is better than the last, to the point that I Spit on Your Grave III is a lot of fun.

So, is this a thread about exploitative labor practices?

In all seriousness, this is a great idea for a thread. We can do some deep dives on some of the really bizarre shit that I'm sure we all watch.

Today I nominate the Canadian classic, Stone Cold Dead

Filmed in 1979 in a downtown Toronto desperately trying to look like 42nd Street - and mostly succeeding - it has quite a few things going for it:
  • An earnest performance by Richard Crenna
  • Paul Williams as a sleazy pimp
  • A striptease by Jennifer Dale
  • A switchblade fight between a hooker and a female cop in a public bathroom
  • A showstopper of a song called Children of the Night, the type of cheesy ballad found in many a 70s film
  • A blink-and-you'll-miss-him cameo by Michael Ironside
  • More singing
  • A bonkers killer reveal and end-chase filmed in the hood where I grew up

Well worth a watch if you like seedy 70s cop films that are trying to say something about the human condition but really don't know what.

Yup and personally, I think discussion on vintage erotica/porn should be allowed encouraged as well. There are a lot of crossovers in genres with directors and actors (Andy Milligan, Wes Craven, Abel Ferrera, Ginger Lynn, Etc). I think better to address this now then when someone comes in here and gets offended by the F word being in someone’s signature.

Excuse me, but could you please omit that 'pallbearer' quote from your signature? As somebody who has actually been a pallbearer, I'm offended and I expect you to cater your signature to my needs.

thnx

I'm probably the only one...but I've separated my collection mostly by country/region of production and then roughly broken down by genres. Some directors (and Naschy) get their own sections since they worked in various places or genres.

Speaking of erotica, I’m looking forward to the upcoming release of La Femme-objet which Vinegar Syndrome will be helping release in the US. There’s 10 days left for their crowdfunder - https://www.ulule.com/femmeobjet/

Additionally I’d recommend the same director’s crime thriller Sins of the Flesh which Mondo Macabro released recently. Voyeurism, murder, blackmail and lots of nudity, a perfect exploitation flick!

I'm not too familiar with classic erotica. I do have a copy of Lady Dynamite. I'm hoping to check out more.

Some highlights from the era...

The Candy Snatchers is so utterly wrong, but it's oh so right.

Another favorite...

As with The Candy Snatchers above, The Baby is one of those movies where, the less you know about it going into it, the better.
I will just say that it is totally bonkers...so wonderfully bonkers.

Another...a fine double-feature...

You all need Bonnie's Kids in your life. Every one of you.

Another double-feature...

None of these are going to change your life, but they're wondrous Saturday afternoon exploitation viewing.

Well, if you put Friday the 13th (1980) and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005) into a blender, then you might end up with something like The Roommates. A group of school friends spends a summer at Lake Arrowhead, enjoying a series of romantic adventures and misadventures. All the while, a mysterious person in black prowls around the resort area killing women. While it's not difficult to predict the identity of the murderer, the movie does do a fantastic job of generating some moments of real suspense, and it amps up the intensity during some of the kill scenes. This is 1970s fun-spirited sleaze at its finest.

A Woman for All Men, which proudly wears the influence of Double Indemnity on its sleeve, is a little slower than The Roommates, but it's another enjoyable 1970s cult flick. Judith Brown is a homewrecker of the first order, as she marries a construction tycoon and weasels her way into his family relationships by sleeping with one of the sons, played by Andrew Robinson (Hellraiser), and freaking out the daughter, played by Patty Bodeen. The family has to be the most dysfunctional family in the world of cinema. Seriously...what other family sits in the living room to watch a slideshow of nude glamour shots that the father took of the stepmother? It's all in the good 1970s fun, though.

I quite like this one. It really plays out like a giallo, except with a sniper instead of a slasher.

BONNIE'S KIDS is, in my opinion, the weaker half of that pairing. THE CENTERFOLD GIRLS is an exploitation mini-masterpiece.

Since it's Noirvember, I was wondering which Giallo films could also be considered Neo-Noir films.
