I'm sure that was the goal, like it would be for any business. But everyone else has cottoned on that streaming/digital is the future and they're all piling in, all wanting a slice of the pie, so Apple don't have things all to themselves. More to the point, that's different from actively 'destroying' Blu-ray and UHD, you make it sound like they're sneaking into the replicating plants at night and chucking a pair of sabot into the gears. No.

Apple get stuff not because they're paying studios to kill Blu-ray, they're putting out content that the studios/labels can't or don't want to release to disc because they don't feel they'll sell enough copies, particularly the high-tariff UHD format. Or the studio already feels that physical media is a dead duck, e.g. MGM. It's no different from Criterion and Imprint nabbing War of the Worlds '53 for release in the US and Australia respectively (on Blu) and Apple have it on digital while Paramount proper just sits on that gorgeous remaster. And, oh look, Arrow will be releasing Oldboy on UHD after all. As I said to you at the time: Arrow were not releasing content on UHD disc in the first place so they monetised that master by flogging it to Apple. But now they've finally gotten into UHD then they're bringing Oldboy out on the format.

And how many of the current crop do you think can maintain their current business model over the next 5 year's?

I highly doubt Netflix is going to survive, seriously. If you happened to subject yourself to The Midnight Sky, there's the start of some writing going on the wall for the Net of Flix.

You honestly believe Netflix will not survive the Streaming Wars? Don't give up your day job . . . you'll never make it as a Prognosticator Extraordinaire

Netflix has 200 million subs in 190 countries. If anyone isn't going to make it, look towards Peacock, Paramount+ or HBO Max. Those are the services whose future is not set in stone.

Netflix makes so much stuff that not every single thing is going to be amazing, it just isn't, although Queen's Gambit is fookin stunning. But who sez it's just Apple and Netflix? There's Amazon and Paramount and Warners and Hulu and Disnee on the content creation side with their own services and in the US it's not just Apple who provide digital films in 4K DV, there's Vudu and Fandango and Movies Anywhere. Don't mistake the virtual hegemony that Apple has in the UK (hence being practically the only place where Arrow could've sold Oldboy) for high quality digital delivery as being the same for everywhere else.

Again: I'm not saying they're not wanting to be the dominant force, but eeeeeeeeeeeeeveryone is also wanting in on that digital business as physical slowly fades into kooky nichedom...and they're not shy about spending billions of dollars to get in on it. If anything Apple's platform for buying movies is itself looking old-fashioned as people become ever more used to the a la carte streaming model for X amount a month.

George Clooney-Directed ‘The Midnight Sky’ On Course To Become One Of Netflix’s Most Watched Films

Quote:
The Midnight Sky is well on its way to becoming one of the biggest-ever films on Netflix — with a projected 72 million households on course to watch the film in the first 4 weeks. Netflix has confirmed that along with the fact that the success is global: The Midnight Sky reached the #1 spot overall in 77 countries; and has been in the Top 10 in 93 countries – from Turkey to Argentina, Germany and Iceland (where part of the movie was shot).

Lol, yeah. At the end of the day it's not the quality that counts (though I'm not knocking the fillum, I haven't seen it), it's how many bums on seats - or rather, eyes on phones - that ultimately counts. And Netflix seem to be doing alright...

Netflix is a company with zero diversification, it survives on a single business. And that businesses revenue is entirely reliant on monthly subscriptions, leaving them highly vulnerable. A shift in popular culture, a new service, anything could cause the Flix to quickly spiral into decline.

Also The Midnight Sky is sitting at 7th currently on Netflix UK. Just 5 days after it's release. So I highly doubt it's generated any meaningful numbers with new subscriptions.

Number of households watching needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I watched a lot of garbage on Netflix but would not say they are anything good. Part of the subscription is why I bothered. No extra cost, just time spent if it sucked.

Note, I am not saying Midnight Sky is bad. I have not seen it and cannot judge it.

Netflix streaming has been around since 2007. It is the largest streaming company in the world. NOW is the time as streaming has become THE business to be in as a media delivery company. That's why Disney, WarnerMedia, Paramount and NBCUniversal wanted in.

We are already in the middle of a "shift in popular culture:" cord cutting and the adoption of streaming in it's place.

The company itself is in excellent financial shape. It carries only a $12 billion debt load which is peanuts for a company whose worth is $232 billion.

Add Financial Analysist as another job you should stay away from.

Does every successful show have to drive up subscriptions or it's deemed a failure? As for your cultural shift Netflix is deeply embedded into the psyche of younger folks today, it's become as synonymous with streaming as Walkman was to personal stereos, so unless something seismic happens like physical media making a comeback - lolno - then Netflix isn't going anywhere. And with cinema-going effectively having been killed off by the 'rona then more people than ever are sucking from Hastings' tasty digital teat, as well as all the rest. Some of those teats will get neglected eventually, but for now there's a lot of them squirting their wares at the public and they're leaving physical media in their wake. Not so much actively killing it with a bullet in the head, more leaving it to rot like a crazy relative locked in the attic that no-one speaks about.

Yes, I hate them so much that I buy as many of the little blighters as I can. At the same time I'm not blind to how things are changing, some folks are so busy blaming one Evil Empire for physical media's woes that they can't see that basically the entire fookin industry has become said Empire.

I don't blame anyone. I'm just concerned how the digital landscape will be shaped.

Anyway. Going to buy an OLED?

Now back to the OLED discussion.

It's not just the phones. It's the whole interface. It's so ugly and basic. And it's on all their platforms. From computers to phone. Not much changes. And charging $50 for a pair of earbuds one can get at Walgreens for $7 is outrageous.

Major deja vu going here. Involving a whole lot of people too. My mind is being blown. Back on subject, physical media isn't dead. It's just transitioning. It will be here with the cockroaches and the twinkles when the world shutters.

Never said it was ded. But it is in an inexorable decline. Us collector mania types will be willing to buy it as long as it's still available, and the move to the tat-laden limited edition model is going to provide enough revenue to keep it going in a hipterish vinyl kinda way. The average person won't give a shit but then they never did, they've got better things to do than obsess over movies. Watch them, yes, but not obsess. Whatever way was most convenient to watch stuff is what dominated the mass market, it always has. That has now changed from a physical format to digital delivery.

I find that I have to watch one movie each day, every week (almost always on disc and either in HD or UHD). Is that obsessive?
