It’s such a great candidate for a 4K transfer. Can’t wait.

Yeah wasn’t a fan of the cropping of the regular BD. Even going back and seeing the framing of my old 4:3 VHS felt less awkward. The framing of the DVD release looked ok though. Hopefully they won’t window box the opening credits this time. The one thing I am not looking forward to is yet another Warner Bros. logo plastering.

Definite purchase. Gene Wilder is suitably creepy and menacing.

Willy Wonka is an all-time revered classic and Charlie was a forgettable adaption from the mid-2000s.

I agree, while Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is, at average, an okay film, the original one will be the best. Cannot wait to order this one. While I like Depp, he still feels like Depp to me, while no one can beat Gene Wilder (loved him in Blazing Saddles as well) as Willy Wonka.

I grew up with that one so it would be nice if they could do both, especially as they’ve done other Burtons.

I mean, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would probably look great in HDR with a new transfer, but the original will always be one of the films Warner loves to release over and over with every format.

True on the first part of the comment but actually Charlie was a more faithful adaptation of the original story than Willy Wonka - the Dahl estate hated the first movie adaptation and only granted Burton and the producers the permission to do the remake when they read and ok'd the script

More Christopher Lee in 4K is also a good thing

Yes but 4K UHD Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would be more profitable for Warner no ?

Given that Johnny Depp's star power isn't what it used to be, this is a suspect claim.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is an amusing adaptation on its own right, but it certainly doesn't have the generations of fans that grew up with and still revere the OG Willy Wonka.

I don't know if I'd call it forgettable. the 1971 film is an American classic but reception for the Burton film in places like the UK, Australia and a lot of Europe consider Burston's film to be better, it's a more accurate adaptation of the book, even has the poems word for word incorpoated into the Oompa Loompa songs. As a fan of the book, I prefer Burton's film but still see the relevence of the 1971 film as a classic. It's like the original The Wizard of Oz - poor adaptation of the source material but a classic film.

Don't be surprised if WB brings the Burton film to 4K but the 1971 film is a more viable candiate because of its age, as a huge part of these upgrades is for film preservation. There's loads of brand new 2K and 4K scans of films sitting in the studio vaults that will never be released to the public for lack of interest but they were restored just to preserve the films themselves.

Splitting hairs there, sir.
