National Lampoon is a brand name.

Think of it as more like National Lampoon presents...
If you look up all of those titles on IMDb, you get this:

Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho is called "Psycho"
John Carpenter's Halloween is titled "Halloween"
But National Lampoon's Animal House is titled "National Lampoon's Animal House"

In casual conversation, of course, what you say holds true. But if someone is asking for the legal name in a forum such as this, the IMDb title is probably the safer bet.

That's the correct title but most people shorten it to Animal House.
Mad Magazine's Up The Academy was shortened to Up The Academy when it came to cable TV because the publishers of Mad Magazine weren't pleased with the movie and wanted all references to Mad Magazine and Alfred E. Neuman deleted from the film.
When Up The Academy was released on DVD, the original title and references to Mad Magazine and Alfred E. Neuman were restored.

The true answer to this question with any film is always “whatever is on the actual title screen of the film”. In this case, Markgway is mistaken.

You can't always go by that.
As I said in my post above, Mad Magazine wanted their name taken off of Up The Academy when it was shown on cable, so if you didn't know it's original title when you saw it on TV, you wouldn't know it's association with Mad Magazine.

So you believe your single solitary exception rule disrupts the whole apple cart? Not to mention, that argument has nothing whatsoever to do with the film we’re actually talking about and doesn’t even seal the deal about the one you are talking about. Just because a studio changes its mind about a title down the line doesn’t undo the history of its original theatrical title (e.g. STAR WARS vs. STAR WARS, EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE or EDGE OF TOMORROW vs. LIVE. DIE. REPEAT.)

I'll be picking this one up regardless as I do not have it in my collection. I'll stick with the regular 4K because I prefer the original artwork to the steelbook.

Even though the actual title of the movie is: National Lampoons: Animal House, everybody still called it Animal House as a abbreviation. For instance: Tales of the Crypt presents: Demon Knight, when people refers to it as Demon Knight instead of saying the entire name.

That was only one example.
James Cameron's Dark Angel is only called Dark Angel on screen but not in any of the merchandise for the show.
Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) is a mouthful so most people are going to shorten it to Birds Of Prey.
And Up The Academy is in the same vein as Animal House, Meatballs, Porky's and The Hollywood Knights.

By that token the "correct" title of Halloween is John Carpenter's Halloween because that's what it says on screen.

That's not how it works with possessives.

National Lampoon's may appear on the same title card but it's NOT part of the title.

None of those examples—not one—is germane to my point. What is on the title screen is the title. It’s that simple. It’s that clear.

It literally is JOHN CARPENTER’S HALLOWEEN, yes. I see a handful of people talking about what certain movies are conversationally known as, but that’s irrelevant to what the literal title is. Call a movie whatever the hell you wanna call it, but its official title is what’s on the screen.

No matter what's on the screen, nobody is going around saying:

MARVEL'S SPIDER-MAN
MARVEL'S IRON MAN
MARVEL'S CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
MARVEL'S THOR
MARVEL'S BLACK WIDOW
MARVEL'S X-MEN
MARVEL'S DAREDEVIL
MARVEL'S THE INCREDIBLE HULK
MARVEL'S ANT-MAN

Even in THE AVENGERS case where it's appropriate to emphasize MARVEL to differentiate it from the British series, people don't bother.

Incidentally, the title of this thread is ANIMAL HOUSE 4K UHD (1978).

John Carpenter is the filmmaker, his name is not part of the title of the movie. The name of the movie is: Halloween. His name just indicates that it's his project, his movie. The same goes for Clive Barker's: Hellraiser. When you're looking for a specific movie in the store or on the internet, you don't go by John Carpenter, you search for the name of the movie which is: Halloween.

This site will most likely list it as just Animal House. Meanwhile, Christmas Vacation here is listed as National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I dunno.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go watch Sam Raimi's Bruce Campbell vs. Army of Darkness.

I’ve had some moronic conversations on this forum, but this one’s threatening to crack the top five (as a side note, the title screens of the Marvel films don’t have “Marvel” on the actual title card, so I have no idea why they’ve even been brought into the discussion, and hey, slimdude, what you’re describing is already accomplished by the “A [director’s name] film” card preceding the title and the “Directed by [director’s name]” card succeeding it—when it’s part of the actual title card, that’s by design and intention). This all started because Jar Jar Stinks asked a question and I’m sure he’s heard enough points from both sides to pick one. I’m no longer interested in arguing other people’s short-hand preferences as being tantamount to fact.

Me: I hope this is an improvement over the old HD master that's plagued Blu-ray releases for years.

This Thread: THE TITLE OF THE FILM IS JOHN LANDIS' NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ANIMAL HOUSE 4K UHD (1978).

What does it say in captions for the title on marketing materials. That's what I go by.
