I guess Disney is done with 3D...which means I have no need to give them any more of my money. Would have bought a 3D for any release from any studio, even though I prefer not to give Disney any more money, but they made it really easy for me now they ended 3D...so it seems WB is the only company continuing 3D discs? Is Sony done? I'd really like to get Venom 2 in 3D later in the year.

Just to chime in on the 3D topic, don’t forget with James Cameron’s Avatar 2 it’s likely to be on far more screens in 3D than not when it releases, since that is one of the few directors that has enough say over how his movies are released to make that happen. If we ever get 3D-4K it’ll likely be a result of renewed interest thanks to that, and it’s possible some newer movies that haven’t releases to 3D home video at all could see new releases to take advantage of the new format.

Around when 4K first came out it was confirmed it would be possible to do 4K in 3D, the issue has mainly been lack of demand for that. Potentially couple that with glasses free 3D TV’s though, another thing a couple companies at least have expiramented with, and you could have the perfect storm for 3D to make a bit of a resurgence. Though many of us would not like it, if you topped that all off with the option to stream some good 3D content on Netflix, Disney+, and such, I could see that helping really proliferate the format. Ultimately so many people just don’t buy physical media anymore thanks to streaming, so if you bring 3D TV’s back with the option of streaming 3D content I think you’d see some potentially big numbers.

Watching the 4K release of Raya right now and it’s stunning, if you could give me a 4K HDR release that is also 3D in a couple years though, you’d better believe I’d rebuy the movie again for that.

Please take these conversations away from this thread - this is a discussion of Raya in 3-D on Blu-ray (or not as it turns out).

Still hopeful this gets a 3D release at some point. I know back when Disney still did 3D in the US that at least the live action Jungle Book and The Force Awakens received 3D releases after the initial home video versions, not with them which is what’s most common. Has similar occurred with any of their European releases before where 3D comes but many months later?

The UK releases of both Frozen II and Onward came slightly after the US releases, but the 2D and 3D UK versions were released simultaneously.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s still possible that Disney UK (where we’re most used to seeing the 3D releases pre-COVID, although even then not all 3D films got a 3D Blu-ray release) could circle back around to some of these 3D releases.

Not to get anyone's hopes up, but it's curious that this edition's cover specifies 2D:

Raya is finally playing in Cinemark but only in 2D unfortunately. If it was 3D, I'd go to see it but I won't bother with the 2D version.

Thanks Deciazulado.
That's interesting and a good point.

----
Why did they say 2D version is the question for them? I wonder if it's early art work or the final packaging. If it was early art work, it could suggest there is a 3D version sold separately, explaining why they mention 2D for this one.

Normally they'll just not mention 3D and that's enough to let people know it's the 2D version only.

I don't know why, but the cover mentioning 'Blu-ray 2D' looks like Disney is trolling us 3D fans who just want to watch films in 3D and not in flat 2D.

Like, can we actually get something to watch in 3D at home, Disney? Please? Could this mean this could eventually release on 3D Blu-ray?

Hopefully Marvel continues releasing their films on 3D Blu-ray. I just want the MCU films to continue getting the 3D treatment.

And the Amazon situation of not letting one order from other countries, making it harder to get overseas releases or even wait, will decrease sales, so give the appearance that there's less demand. So support your formats of choice.

As a fellow Brazilian, I feel your pain Sanfox. No more physical media in any format was such a sucker punch from Disney and I also haven't been able to buy Frozen II, The Rise of Skywalker and Onward on 3D Blu-ray because amazon UK is only shipping to Brazil through priority mail since the pandemic started, which is highly costly, so I'm feeling really sad that the collection is incomplete in many ways.

My guess is that’s fake or some 3D haters taking the piss.

That’s very peculiar. You’d think they’d have announced the 3D with it if that meant anything though. My best guess is that the deluxe version with art cards is normally reserved for the 3D edition in Germany (I have a copy of the live action Lion King 3D from Germany and it’s the art card one) so maybe they are making it clear to collectors that this time it does not come with a 3D Blu-ray. If I’m right about that, that makes this not only not hopeful but actually very depressing because it means Disney is properly signalling the end of 3D Blu-ray in arguably its biggest market

I have to imagine it's to prevent confusion. You're probably on to something here

Except.. even that doesn't really make sense.

The whole premise for not releasing 3D is that there isn't an appreciable market. Surely if said market is too minuscule to milk with premium priced 3D releases then said market isn't large enough to justify altering the packaging for the other 99.8% of customers.

Also from a pure logic standpoint not putting 3D on the package, disc list or features isn't likely to confuse anyone that has enough brain power to get a 3D disc working at home. Adding a redundant "2D" blurb to the cover however will look weird to, well everyone.

It could be on the mock-up and not on the actual product. 3D discs are still a big seller in Germany, I’m pretty sure it’s one of the biggest 3D markets.

I don’t think anyone should get their hopes up over this, I can’t remember a studio ever calling the regular Blu-ray a 2D Blu-ray while there was a 3D version available, or just in general. For now my money’s on clarifying that this will not have a 3D disc unlike past Disney DE art cards releases. I’d love to be wrong.

It`s for real!"

"2D" is mentioned on the actual product!

Source: Picture from Ebay Germany

Maybe Disney is planing a wider cinema release of the 3D Version when cinemas reopen in countries of Europe?

The mention of "2D" would make only sense on this product, if a later release would include a "3D" disc...

Or because they are clarifying the art card version will not have 3D this time.

Again, I would LOVE to be wrong. This movie is amazing. I’m going to hold off buying the 4K for now.

I received the German Deluxe Blu-ray yesterday and can sadly confirm that "2D" is mentioned on the actual product :/

It's also weird that they release a Blu-ray + DVD packaging after all those years..haven't seen those in ages. And it's true, usually these art card editions come with the 3D Blu-ray.

For me this is also the first German Disney Blu-ray I've bought in years.. I used to import the regular US-Blu-rays because I liked the packaging better and they were often released way earlier than the German ones. But sadly the regular Blu-ray are not released with slipcovers anymore in the US, another downer :/
