Somehow Warner didn't get the message in time for the Ocean's trilogy to drop a few years ago.

As a person who has grown so very tired of all the CGI laden, whizz banger crap that passes for SciFi these days, I would love it if every studio forced their latest young gun hotshot directors to watch SOLARIS and MOON (2009) before they were allowed anywhere a set.

The version you speak of sounds too good to be true. I would be happy with barebones 4K HDR (ATMOS at a stretch) of the theatrical.

Force directors to watch sci-fi classics all you want, but if audiences want the CGI-laden stuff, then that's what the directors will be told to make.

The space scenes were a lot longer too, especially the docking. Almost certainly the first time I found CG space stuff totally convincing, probably because they were working with 8K textures and Cinesite was on the top of their game for him. Richard 'Doc' Baily did a lot of the bizarre energy planetary stuff, his specialty was doing that kind of CG-version-of-Jordan-Belson imagery, though he also did the buildings collapse at the end of FIGHT CLUB and the fall through glass in THE GAME.

Yeah, my friend told me about the docking sequence being much longer. He also said the WP didn't intercut
[Show spoiler]the first sex scene between Kelvin and his wife's "Solaris double" with his flashbacks to meeting his actual wife, but rather played out the sex-scene-with-Solaris-double as a stand alone sequence, then went into the flashback as its own sequence, then back to Kelvin waking on the ship next to the double. Also, there was the scene of the one double destroying the door, the aftermath of which is shown in the final cut
.

I cannot believe the Ocean's trilogy still hasn't been released to 4K yet. WB is dropping that ball on those movies. My other most wanted WB 4Ks that are MIA are The Departed and The Hangover.

I'd be curious if the "tints" would be eased up a bit (especially the "blue" scenes) in a remaster.

I've never bought a Kino title before. I have the original Universal Blu-ray, and I think it's a pretty good presentation. Are Kino Blu-rays a pretty good upgrade?

Just revisited this one for the first time on blu and in what is roughly... 21 years since I've seen it. Maybe because I was just a youngin fast forwarding through to any scenes with J-Lo, but I don't remember loving the film, which I do after watching it tonight. From the cinematography to the score, it was excellent. I suppose anything with Don Cheadle in it has to be pretty good, right

I'll be purchasing the UHD on day 1

I only have two 4k UHD's, and both are definitely a major upgrade to their best blu ray counter parts: Mad Max and The Good The Bad and the Ugly.

As for blu rays the record is still good but sometimes they get passed by UK's Masters of Cinema and BFI on older movies. However this is for releases from years ago. I think Kino has been getting better and better.

A lot of the look was achieved photochemically so it should look basically the same but less video like (previous transfer has some clipping and sharpening)

The Blu-ray is okay, but I feel like it has evidence of Universal sharpening issues.

That’s awesome news! I’m excited to see how Soderberg’s HDR grade looks on this one.
