Disney Japan ends their 3D with RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET
Pixar Japan ends their 3D with INCREDIBLES 2
Marvel Japan still seems keeping releasing 3D

I watched this on Disney+ and it’s heartbreaking that it won’t be getting a 3D Blu-ray.

The animation is utterly sublime. Every frame is a work of art. The story is also incredible, it’s up there with top tier Pixar stuff for me. 3D would have been the icing on a perfect cake. Instead it sits gathering dust on a hard drive somewhere, and Disney loses out on $30-70 that I happily would have given them for the 3D version.

Capitalism and art don’t mix.

Disney is not losing any money on this that is why they don't care releasing it or not, actually they end up saving money on units not sold, so yeah...

MOD exists. It's just arbitrary neo-corporatism where they can't be bothered to release the 3D because it's 'not enough' profit or they want to push people towards streaming more so they don't care about strangling home media.

Choosing to not make a profit because it wouldn't be enough of a profit...I can't imagine it, I expect Disney to be avaricious, not vicious (and lazy lol).

My local Cinemark still has a multilayered 3D cardboard cutout up plugging this film, and its 3D. Too bad that the film is long gone from the theater.

On the plus side, next to it was the ticket checker, and he had wheeled out a yuge cart chockablock with boxes of new RealD glasses as "3D showings have been really popular lately".

Sure, that's because of NWH, but I did notice that our 3D showings of it were booked solid while time-adjacent 2D showings had a fair few seats free. Perhaps the tide is turning a tad for us?

I'd like to believe that. I'm holding out hope that the continued rise and adoption of VR will lead to studios releasing their 3D titles for that format in a predictable cash grab. I doubt we'd be lucky enough to see a new 4K/8K 3D format disc, but at least if digital versions are out there it gives us hobbyists a chance of watching these titles at home, one way or another...

It’s not that they’re choosing not to make a profit, they’re trying to push people to streaming and they have every right to do so. It’s no different than spending money on marketing, you take a small hit for long term gains. Some of these companies spend 5 million on a super bowl add to promote a streaming service, I can guarantee you there’s no 3D disc on Earth that’s going to do 5 million as a standalone in 2021. If you spend all this money promoting Disney+ on TV, you want to make sure people migrate. I’m not happy about it but it’s not like all of these billion dollar companies are making the same mistake, they have much more data than we do to make the decisions they do.

None of these movies, including multi million dollar 3D conversions exist without capitalism. The mistake is thinking this is art when it’s an industry. The artists are the ones working two jobs to support their craft.

There’s a guy on here who makes his own 3D movies. Instead of worrying about corporate Disney, but his movie and support an artist.

Ah yes, and cave paintings didn’t exist without capitalism either.

Movies are art. 3D conversions are art. The first movies, and 3D movies, weren’t made for money. They were made for the art. Hence why I say capitalism and art don’t mix. I guarantee most of the people working at these conversion studios take pride in their work, maybe even read forums like these to see what the public think, and yet their work is owned by Disney, and they’ve decided to lock it in their cellar for no reason whatsoever.

If Encanto etc 3D aren't on D+ then Disney is not pushing us to streaming, and our 3D hobby isn't competing with D+?

On migration, I wonder as Disney went all-in with Verizon Wireless, like Netflix went in with T-Mobile. Millions of people out there are, I suspect, have D+ just because it came with their phone...whether they wanted it or not. Whatever money Disney gets from Verizon for that is free money for life, a captive customer base.

From what I've heard on the YouTube circuit, I wonder if a domestic 3D release of any yet-unreleased Disney bluray would sell more copies than there are D+ subscribers who streamed all of Hawkeye.

I know I would pick up Encanto 3D if it were out...and I am even less of a fan of Lin Manuel Miranda than Dr. House was

You’re being too hopeful there, not happening. A lot of theaters already dropped the 3D showings in favor of more 2D only shows.

Encanto will be avaiable in 3D at Disney+ for the Vision Pro:

https://www.areadvd.de/news/disney-s...le-vision-pro/

(google translate)

Disney has introduced its streaming app for Apple's new "Vision Pro" glasses. The new “Mixed Reality” glasses from Apple, which will initially be released in the USA on February 2nd, 2024, support the playback of films in 3D via two integrated 4K Micro OLED displays with HDR and “Spatial Audio” support. Disney+ subscribers should be able to experience numerous films in 3D on the Vision Pro at no additional cost.

The following films will be available in 3D at launch:

Avatar: The Way of Water
Avengers: Endgame
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Elemental
Encanto
Films purchased via iTunes/Apple TV should be available in 3D without a Disney+ subscription at no extra charge or can be purchased or rented individually. The 3D films are streamed to the Apple Vision Pro glasses in Ultra HD resolution including Dolby Vision HDR with Multiview High Efficiency Video Coding (MV-HEVC) - in some cases even at high frame rates. Additionally, the entire Disney+ catalog is available for streaming in 2D.

According to Disney, the three-dimensional environments of the app for the Vision Pro glasses were created in the Universal Scene Description format (USD), originally developed by Pixar, which is now open source and is intended to become the industry standard according to Disney and Apple.

In addition to Disney+, streaming services such as Apple TV+ and Max will also be usable on the glasses. The Apple Vision Pro also has an integrated 3D camera system that allows you to take your own pictures and videos in 3D. There are also over 250 games available on Apple Arcade for the Apple Vision Pro.

In addition to entertainment applications, Apple Vision Pro also offers support for real office work. With the visionOS operating system, the real environment can be connected to the virtual surface of the glasses. Control takes place via eyes, hands and speech. A controller is not required. Power is supplied either via a power adapter or up to two hours via an external battery.

At least this will be viewable in 3D if you want to drop a ton of money on the Apple Vision Pro. There are threads already to discuss that device so to avoid having the same discussion in multiple threads please use one of those, this thread is for discussion of the movie.
