No you weren't rude, you are not at fault, but I have my own opinions, and I feel Amazon sucks and is well-known as being a very worker-unfriendly working environment, and I feel your opinion on BM is also way over-the-top. You seem to think differently? OK, that's cool, you do you. Keep paying Amazon a yearly or monthly fee just for the 'privilege' of buying from them. Hilarious. Just agree to disagree, then. You're all good.

Careful guys, I got banned for a few days from this kind of talk. Not even sure which post nor what I commented to get the ban. But it happened.

I received my three 70's made-for-tv bug horror movies on release day. Ants! was the star for me. I'd say Kino agrees, it was the only title with a reversible cover insert (love it) and a sensor tag. I've since watched Ants!, the audio is a bit flat, with a background sizzle or hiss sound frequently. But looks incredible. Far beyond anything anyone's ever seen on this title. I hadn't read details, so was surprised by the choice of full frame or widescreen ratios. Now if Kino would just release Don't Go to Sleep!!

Ants review up at Beaver: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film6/dvd_r...7/ants_dvd.htm
Kino really screwed this up, with including the 1.85 aspect ratio! No need, and so we get totally castrated bitrates: 16 mbps for the film, and a picture which looks pretty awful, smeary, video-like and lacking grain because of the needlessly marginalized low bitrate encodes. The OAR is 1.33:1, and that's the ratio which should have been used, with an average bitrate in the upper 20s to low 30s at the minimum. Just like Kino's done on their recent TVM releases. Who the hell did they outsource this mess of an encode to? They even throw away an extra unused 10 Gig on the BD-50, so this is really a lazy cashgrab on their part. Very disappointing, as their recent TVM releases have been mostly exceptional, and very appreciated. Are there any reports on TARANTULAS or TERROR OUT OF THE SKY? These are great, hokey films, and I hope they, also haven't been given poor encodes with bitrates barely above their DVD counteraparts, with throwaway, useless 1.85:1 transfers taking away valuable disk space and compromising the 1.33:1 presentations. Anyone received these and care to give BD-INFOs on your discs? It's be appreciated. |

Both Tarantulas and Terror Out of the Sky have noticeably higher bit-rates even on BD-25 discs, but they have their own share of encode issues. The Gamma/Black Crush is really botched in many of the darker scenes for some reason... which didn't seem to affect the Ants encode. Here is a BDInfo scan for Tarantulas: The Deadly Cargo: Code:

What? Ants! looked beautiful to me. Based upon my experience with previous Ants! releases. I noticed much improved depth, detail and color. Very thankful this blu release happened at all. Surreal. And from what I saw, I even like Ants! in 1.85:1

Katatonia. thanks very much for posting those BD-Info scans. Although higher bitrate, something's very screwed up on both TARANTULAS and TERROR OUT OF SKY. Notice the bitrate graphs *never* dip below 20 mbps; the encodes aren't optimized -- there are no peaks and valleys, as is the norm on other reputable companies with great encodists / encoding software like Vinegar Syndrome. There's obviously a LOT of wasted bits there, as even simple scenes / all black fades are being encoded at 20 mbps. Someone totally screwed these up; I suspect a dial was simply put on autopilot / lazy-ass settings, and the lazy bastards who "encoded" these called it a day -- and an easy cashgrab.
Judging by what you reported about crushed black, they probably screwed up the color-space, gamma, or both. The 24-fps scan also doesn't bode well; could have been a slowed-down PAL video master or worse. Absurd! Kino should fire these lazybones numbskull idiot encodists who did these three discs. If this is a harbinger of things to come from Kino, I'm totally, completely done with the company, and they can go screw themselves. Very disappointed. This is 2022, not 2005. Blu-ray encoding's better now. The bar is higher, but you sure as hell wouldn't know it from these hatchet jobs. |

But, there was so much more potential, which was carelessly thrown away in a slipshod awful encode of a poor transfer. If they had just done ANTS properly, it would have looked exceptional and blown the awful DVD out of orbit. (see the Beaver review, where he states that DVD was probaby the *worst* DVD he had every reviewed in his 10,000 DVDs!).

I'm not sure what happened, but they definitely aren't quite up to the usual Kino encode standards. I can't recall ever seeing 24 fps used on Kino releases previously, they always just use the correct 23.976 fps. I'm still glad they were released, and they definitely are an improvement over the old DVD's... I just wish a little more care would have gone into the encodes. |

Well, even if it’s not great, it’s better than what I had for these films, which is nothing.
I had ordered all three on sale from Barnes and Noble, but then out of the blue got an order cancelled notice. Something about not being able to process my payment through PayPal, which has happened to me a few times lately. Then I got a shipping notice for only Ants even though I haven’t been charged for anything. I believe it was shipped 9 days ago with UPS mail innovations, which is never good. It was sent to Brooklyn, where I live, then to NJ, then back to Brooklyn, then out of state again. Last I checked it was back in Brooklyn but not scheduled for delivery until the 15th. Primo efficiency. Can’t wait to see what this poor copy is going to look like after 2+ weeks on UPS trucks. But since they didn’t charge me, I’m not concerned about it. |
