IMO, Scream 2 is the perfect sequel to the first one. It feels like an organic continuation from the first one - all the characters truly feel like they have evolved and grown from the events back in Woodsboro. Gale has the best arc out of any of the movies, the set pieces are on point and the suspense is just as good, if not better, than the first. Now Scream 3 - with all its faults - still FEELS like a Scream movie. Gale and Dewey aren’t as consistently characterized but Sid still feels like the same Sid we know and love and while it’s not perfect, I still think it’s better than Scream 4. Out of the 4 movies, 4 feels the least like a Scream movie. The cinematography is drastically different (that HORRIBLE ugly filter), the music is too comedic, the lines people spout as they die are played for laughs instead of horror, not to mention both Courtney and David seem like they could care less about playing Gale and Dewey again. Only Neve as Sidney feels remotely familiar here and she is the one true saving grace.

I’m really hopeful to hear the positive early reactions to the fifth one because if it’s any closer to the quality of the first two I know I will love it.
I always thought 3 was the weakest until the re-watch, but you're right, it definitely feels like a Scream movie, but one made where everyone was tired, so the suspense and kills seemed more throw away. But Parker Posey was so great and Sid was still Sid. That's another thing that bothered me about 4
[Show spoiler]Sid didn't even try to fight back during the killer's monologue but did in every other entry (and very well too).
and yeah, even when I liked 4 on my first viewing the jokey kills bothered me, especially since all three of the others played the suspense straight. Peter Deming is a great DP but 4 did not look great.

I’ve not revisited 4 after that first viewing, I thought it was so bad. If you aksed me right now to explain whodunnit I couldn’t even tell you, I seem to have blotted it from my mind apart from that “hahahaaa we’re SO clever” opening-within-an-opening-within-an-opening scene. Should really watch it again at some point but I’m not going out of my way to do so, put it that way.

I had the Blu-ray since it first came out and never watched it until now because I was sure it wouldn't hold up, and it sure didn't, so no need to re-watch it on your end, it probably won't get any better for you. And those false beginnings eat up so much time that when they finally get to the real scene it's super rushed through and unsatisfying (even with reshoots to beef it up apparently).

Scream 4 is great. 3 is the only bad one.

I own them all but I have only recently seen the original. Plus, I'm planning to see this new one on Friday. I remember liking the first three in diminishing returns, but not the fourth. I have zero expectations for the new one.

I liked the 4th after hating the 3rd. Got my tickets for Sunday. Doubt it will be as bad as 3.

The original seemed so fresh at the time. There were horror movies before it that were meta and self-aware, but everything just worked here. There was a pretty strong sense of horror history, a solid cast, and it didn't come off as just a silly mockery. Wes Craven was also probably the perfect guy to take this script to the next level. Great blend of horror and comedy and it's crazy how influential the movie still is over two decades later. Still remember where I was the night this movie was released to theaters.

If anyone has T-Mobile, Scream is this week's $4 movie ticket deal.

You really should revisit 4. I did a week or so ago...and wow.

What seemed hokey and too "topical" at the time - the beginnings of social media - are so frickin' spot on, it's eerie.

"You mean you record your daily life at high school and broadcast it on the internet?"

The entire last act plays WAY differently now 10 years later. I mean, I always liked the movie - I like all of them - but man was I shocked at how well 4 has aged - what was once far-fetched is again - eerie is the best word I have to describe it, from the vantage point of the 2020's.

I wouldn’t even call 3 bad, it’s just ok.

4 is phenomenal though.

Parker Posey alone makes 3 a worthy watch...

Weakest movie in the series. Somehow has less to say than 3, and does the things it’s supposedly making fun of more than any of the other Scream films. Not a single decent set piece in the whole thing. Wafer thin characters. Legacy cast wasted and underwritten. Poor direction and editing.

It’s a January horror flick, alright.

It had the Dolby Atmos logo at the end of the credits. Hopefully the discs will carry the Atmos mix. The DV presentation at the cinema also looked pretty darn great. There was a slight layer of what appeared to be some sort of grain. Not sure if this was just slight camera noise or if the filmmakers added it in post. Either way it was very non-intrusive and it made it look more filmic.

Phenomenal sequel btw . The most fun and excitement I’ve had at the movies in a long time with a horror film. There were plenty of good movies this past year, but 2022 has opened with quite a bang with this one.

Also nice to see the auditorium at the cinema was somewhat packed. And this was a Thursday late night 10pm showing so hopefully that means solid box office results.

As soon as you said a light layer of film grain I freaked out. After rewatching the horrible transfers of 2 and 3 and the ugly cinematography of 4, I was hoping we would get a beautiful crisp 4K image with this one. Now I’m worried it’s going to look soft and grainy like 4.
