She has the same attitude with music. If I'm playing some old music she complains and says I should have the radio on and only be listening to new stuff. What's the point of listening to music you've already heard or watching old stuff you've already seen when there's so much new stuff out there every day?

They came around the other day and my mate browsed through my collection and wanted to borrow the blu-ray of Excalibur but she talked him out of it.

"You've seen it years ago! Why would you want to watch it again?" she sneered.

When he told it was a great film she rolled her eyes and explained "but it's an old movie!"
Next time she talks about going to her favorite restaurant again reply back with, "Why? You've already eaten there before."

I don't see how any woman can tell a man, that movie collecting is a waste of money. They are the biggest offenders of wasting money. When I worked in retail, and every holiday came around, I would see the same thing with woman. They spend so much money on all these holiday themed sculptures, napkins, table cloths, signs, flowers, beads, candles, necklaces, etc, etc. You name it. Then, just to throw it away, and buy the same new crap next year.

My rules for lending out movies. It's very rare nowadays, since most people I know are streaming only.

1) It has to be someone I completely trust in taking care of the movie, and returning it in a timely fashion, and in the same condition it was lent out. That list of people is pretty small though.

2) Movies lent out go in a blank throwaway case. I don't trust people enough to not ruin a slip cover, or ruin the insert.

3) If the movie is out of print, or hard to find. You ain't borrowing it. You can come over and watch it with me.

But, like I said, most people I know are streaming only now. So, it's not really a problem. My brother and I were recently talking movies, and I had mentioned some I was watching. My brother inquired about maybe borrowing them but, couldn't even remember if he still owned a blu-ray player lol.

Anyway, it's a fun hobby for us collectors, and can keep us out of trouble. For anyone in a relationship, whose significant other complains about their partners movie collecting well, that person should be happy. They aren't out boozing it up, or hooked on meth. Or spending their hard earned money on another woman. Life is too short. Be with someone who makes you happy, and have a hobby that makes you happy

I only said that because that's the reaction I get from people. Like so many have mentioned here, I don't believe anyone in this forum cares about an outside opinion on their hobbies and habits.

My knee jerk reaction to sneaker addicts, as you mentioned, could be "wow, that's a lot of money spent," but it's a fleeting thought. I'm not into it, so it's not for me to understand. Whatever slice of happiness a person can have in this life and if they're not hurting anyone, I'm all for it.

I don't even need rules for lending out movies anymore, because people have straight up stopped asking me. They've seen how anxious I am about them.

But these are good rules. #3 in particular; there are a good number of movies in my collection I straight up wouldn't let out of my sight. I barely trust myself with them. But there's plenty of others that are easily replaceable that I'd be fine lending out.

But people don't understand that distinction. If they see me get super weird about lending out my OOP Invaders From Mars, they'll assume I'll be equally weird about lending out my Pet Sematary remake.

Most of my friends won't question it because they know I'm a collector, and some of them even enjoy perusing my collection when they come over, which I love. In fact I think I've even rubbed off on a couple of them, as on a few occasions I've had them come to me telling me about the latest release they picked up, or one that they're excited for. I also enjoy lending films out, but most of the films that I own that are hard to find on streaming are not really the ones my friends would be interested in, so there's not a huge need for it.

The most common response I've had from others though, who don't know I'm a collector, is to question why, since "no one has DVDs anymore." I usually just shrug, and say "well, I do." I know I could go on and on about how it's actually blu-rays, and not necessarily DVDs that I collect, and get into my philosophies on physical media and why I enjoy collecting it, but I don't bother. If you get it, you get it, if you don't, you don't.

One good thing about collecting physical media now is that no one ever asks me to borrow a film anymore as they dont have anything past a dvd player.

People calling blu rays "DVDs" is every parent who called any video game console a "Nintendo" back in the day.

I don't allow strangers who I don't know very well inside my home except for family members and repairmen ( when needed) and I don't tell everybody where I live either for privacy and security reasons. So therefore, not very many know nor even seen my movie collection to comment about it. Besides I'm not the kind of person who like to show off and boast about the material things that I have.

My girlfriend knows I have a ton of discs, but perhaps not quite the extent of it...she's never fully explored the closet under the stairs that houses my "video archives." She understands it, though, and knows it's my "thing," and typically gets me a number of new Blus every birthday and Christmas, so she's in on it too.

A couple of years ago, though, I took some DVDs that I had upgraded to Blu-ray over to her brother's house, as well as few Blus that were duplicates I somehow or another wound up with, thinking that he and his family may like them; it was a bunch of sci-fi type stuff that they like too, like the more recent Battlestar Galactica show, and some films. They're huge on being cutting edge with tech, however, and I hadn't realized how much disdain they have for physical media now. I'll never forget the looks on their faces when I offered the discs to them, and how they stared at them as they sat on their counter...

If I had brought an excessively full litter box into their house and dumped it on their counter, their faces would have been more positive than they way they looked at those discs. They declined, acted weird about it, and they seriously looked like I had brought a leper with oozing open wounds into their house. I would not have been surprised if they disinfected the counter where the discs had touched once I left. That's honestly how aghast they were about the thing...utterly bizarre to me.

I am a college teacher, and if I mention having a library of DVD and Blu-rays, the looks on the teenage and twenty-somethings' faces are like that of a puppy cocking its head to the side as it tries to figure out something, too...they cannot conceive of having movies or music on a disc, and don't even like physical books, either, or turning in work on paper. They want everything to just be on a computer screen. I occasionally show them some videos off of discs, and they look at me weirdly at that, too...they honestly don't get that not everything ever made by man is online, or they have the attitude that if it's not online, it's obviously something that is irrelevant.

It's true that the vast majority of my thousands discs will likely never get played again, as life is not long enough for that, but that's not the point to me...it's having a library that gives me options to watch this or that if I should feel like it, not dependent on internet connection, what's available on what streaming service, and the censorship/availability whims of corporations. As I worked for a movie theatre chain for almost a decade, it's nostalgia for that job that I loved, too.

What's even weirder to most people than my discs, though, is the fact that I live a smartphone free existence, too...now THAT reeeally makes people go "Whaaaaaaaaaaaa????"

Maybe she won't visit anymore The gall of some people going into someone's home and disparaging their tastes or hobbies. You have to be a certain kind of person to think that's OK and I'd rather not surround myself with people like that. I don't need that in my life.

[Show spoiler]I've told a few co-workers about my collection and have gotten the same kind of responses most on here have described: They ask "Why?" and I get looks of pity Then they change their minds when I mention how much money I've made selling movies on Ebay. One guy wanted me to sell his movies for him /
In my experiences
[Show spoiler], as someone who's been serious with more than one person with bpd, narcissism, etc, whatever kind of the crazy outward behavior they'll show in the presence of others is usually fairly mild compared to how they'll act in private around their SO. My ex would flip off the rails every few months at work when mildly criticized; she'd blow up and get up in their face, then accuse them of being the bad ones, with her probably clinching her fists or pointing a finger and then just storming out of there on the spot to never return. It was a familiar routine and she went through jobs like every 3-6 months at most because she'd be verbally abusive and then quit on the spot. She apparently made several people cry because of her putdowns, but she's very charismatic and bubbly and could tend to brush her behavior off afterwards. Because of the kinds of jobs she was seeking she was always in demand to get rehired because of understaffing. At home with me, these kinds of tirades and harsh monologues were very frequent and numbing. Going on long monologues and throwing everything in sight around the house seemed like just another Tuesday. Some will even get chastised in public like I did, and there are many public freakout kind of videos on YT where you can see guys calm as ever while their gf/wife treat them horribly. Side rant perhaps as far as collecting, but these kinds of people can slowly chip away at you by cutting out your favorite hobbies, saying they're stupid/a waste of time and thus you are stupid and wasting time for enjoying them. And of course they'll likely also try to cut you off from friends and family because they, too, are no good in their eyes.

I've collected about 300 movies since first buying Blu-Ray in 2010, but I haven't had much of a reason to show them off just for the sake of it.

If they’re truly into knowing re: what constitutes “cutting-edge” then you’d think they would be aware that blu-rays and UHDs are the most technically superior method of viewing content at home. With streaming they’re, at best, getting a squished version of whatever master was used for the disc. Nevermind that many of the best transfers remain disc-exclusive due to licensing rights.

Most people I know who strive to keep up with the very latest technology and fads (lots of them in LA) do so mainly for superficial and/or status reasons, not because they’re enthusiastic or even knowledgeable about the actual advances.

You have my respect. Smartphone addiction has done more damage to the collective human psyche over the last 15 years than almost anything before or since. The pressure to stay plugged in at all times can be excruciating.

Funny, my dog hates it too now that I think about it. Every time I go to pull out the media drawer on the entertainment he starts licking my hand and jumping on me. He's obviously made the connection of the drawer pull and getting ignored for the next 2 hours.

They certainly know that Blu and 4K Blu are superior to streaming, but that their angle with tech is that they just want to have or do whatever is the newest and most popular, and they want pretty much everything they own to be internet connected, and everything they do to have an online presence. They worship at the altar of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If there is an electric toothbrush out there that will connect to a smartphone and report your brushing habits and give recommendations on how to brush, and report their gum health to their social media, they'd be all over that....how well it actually cleans teeth would be immaterial.

This is what I always think of when people say buying physical media is a "waste"...as they spend $100 a week on ciggies, booze and lottery tickets.

They think I'm weird, can't comprehend why anyone would want to own a movie, once it's watched it should never be seen again I guess. My large L.P. and CD collection is scoffed at as well. I've come to the conclusion over my 52 years that most people are a-holes. Lol!

I can relate. I have never owned a cellphone, of any kind, or a tablet. People are shocked when they find out. One friend in particular likes to tease me about it. He keeps calling me an old man, I'm 42 and 10 years younger than him, and telling me that I need to get with the times or some such bs.

I don't even really use my house phone so why would I get a phone that I can bring with me wherever I go? And I already have a computer, so why would I need a tablet or a smartphone? When I go out I like the idea of being unreachable. If somebody wants to get a hold of me they can leave a message on the answering machine or message me on Facebook. Too many people, himself included, are obsessed with their mobile devices. They always have to have it in hand. I can't even tell you how many times I was talking to him at work and he wouldn't be saying anything. Then I'd look up and he'd have his nose buried in his phone. Cellphone zombies is what I call them and I have no intention of becoming one.

To be Honest-IT DOESN"T MATTER what others think of YOUR movie collection. AS LONG AS YOU LIKE YOUR movie collection-that is all that matters. If someone else doesn't like it-Tough!

I'm reminded of my teenage years, when I would read Fangoria at school and wear my Freddy Krueger t-shirts (and buttons on my jean jacket) with pride. A lot of my classmates would look at me funny, or come right out and say "you're weird".

I'm assuming we're all adults here; other adults are being judgmental over a person's movie collection? I don't doubt this is happening, but why? What's the big deal?

I'll just close with my favorite quote from The IT Crowd. "People. What a bunch of b*stards."
