I don't think the film's director, the late Peter Collinson (who died back in 1980 when he was just 44), gets enough credit for its success. I'd love to see Paramount release THE PENTHOUSE, Collinson's directorial debut, on Blu-ray. Now there's a British film ripe for rediscovery.

These people persist under the pathetic delusion that KLI could one day become their "friend" or would ever want to.
I have no issues with KLI personally because I recognize he's a sales rep for his company (although I think he bristled at this description once and said he was in acquisitions - whatever) and his only relationship to me or anyone else here is to sell product, not to be my friend or sing Kumbaya with me like so many others here so desperately crave. To anyone reading this, before you respond and defend yourself, take a step back and realize you're exactly who I'm talking about if you're actually "offended" by any of the true words I've posted. |

KLI is actually my estranged father. I thought we could rebuild our relationship, but this Italian Job business is the last straw.

He is not my friend here or in real life but he is more of an authority on his company decisions because he actually works for KL and is in the industry.

I guess the problem with this sentiment by KL, being British is that those with good taste love this British film, Michael Caine in one of his top 5 roles of his career.
It hurts when a home media outfit not big enough to release their blu Rays/4ks overseas directly in the Uk tells us this film is not good enough for a 4k release. Perhaps if they listened to their audience they wouldnt be restricted in releasing their discs in NA only and would actually build their business, but hey they are in the home entertainment business so they must no everything correct? Only that philosophy is flawed when it comes to the artwork on the new Star Trek 4k releases or Disney with Star Wars, but please go ahead and defend everyone in that home entertainment business because they know better than the rest of us. You do realise that job roles that far down the chain that anyone in a more profitable business in a completely different area eg food is smart enough to see their flaws and could easily move jobs to their role and suddenly be the go to guy just because they are in the hot seat when they release something. These people are experts just because they just have the role for now and think they are above everybody else in their view of the World. |

KLI definitely strives to "be correct" in everything - this is usually the source of any strife. They're a bit judgmental and defensive regarding movie quality, PQ, genre popularity, since, at the end of the day, in their mind, they're absolutely correct in their assertions. This sometimes leads to something like the Silence of the Lambs debacle - where KLI argued for pages and pages that not only was the master not flawed (tldr - an HDR mastering issue resulted in everything appearing greenish for the first 20 minutes) despite a deluge of evidence and explanation, but actively insulted the intelligence and skill of anyone willing to defend the patently obvious issue. KLI has opinions, and they are treated as facts which people can either understand, or they're simply incorrect.
That being said, KLI is a big part of why I make purchases from Kino Lorber. They're extremely informative and have given me more information regarding the nuances of film acquisition and licensing than I could have ever gleaned elsewhere. They put ample time into the forum to ensure most queries are addressed, and I'm absolutely grateful for their presence. Are they a jerk? They certainly delight in belittling people. Are they a boon to the forums? Absolutely. Both can be true. |

my point is: kino doesn't think it's worth putting it on 4K alright. but that's not what Paramount thinks. if they thought the same, there wouldn't be a 4K remaster in the first place, maybe 2K at best or they could've handed the old master right? no. they did a 4K remaster. and paramount themselves will release a 4K disc globally at some point. that's all I'm saying. what are you arguing about? what you're writing doesn't make sense |

I've wondered this for a while now, so don't think of it as another "request" for Kino specifically, but apply it to any US company in this situation.
Since many of us are used to importing region locked BDs because they're not allowed to be sold by major retailers in our own country, don't these exclusive 4K UHD releases sell more imports due to them being region free by design? For example, wouldn't you expect Kino's sales of Silence Of The Lambs 4K UHD were improved due to this? Yes, I know Kino can't directly sell most releases outside of US/Canada, but they do sell through Amazon, DeepDiscount, and other retailers who will ship to other countries. I would think that being the only UHD release in the world would bump sales in these cases. When I've mentioned Australia's region free Imprint BDs in the Kino thread, KLI said he doesn't even follow them and didn't know they have region free limited edition exclusive titles. Also, that they had already released a BD of a title on Kino's upcoming schedule. Seems like Kino leaves various other options on the table when they don't consider a global market, but it's possible that the sales figures still wouldn't work for them anyway. I've just been surprised how little consideration they appear to have for such import-friendly potential. ![]() |
