So, while Kino Lorber was grabbing 4K rights to Criterion blu-rays, Criterion was grabbing 4K rights to Disney? Unreal!

In the email they say "collaboration with Disney and Pixar"

Still trying to process this, but this is awesome news - if there's one Pixar film that also deserves to be in the Criterion library, it's WALL-E.

More importantly, though, is that this may open up Disney's live-action back catalog (Buena Vista/Touchstone) to Criterion. So stuff like Mann's The Insider or Ed Wood or Lincoln or Dead Poets Society may finally get the (4K) home video releases they deserve.

I would never have predicted this in a million years, what a nice surprise announcement. Hopefully, it leads to bigger and better things in the future, like some prime fox titles being licensed out by the mouse...

I didn't even know there was already a UHD of this - and it's only $17.33! This has got to be a yoke.

Yeah, I also have no intention to buy this and if it's the same master/grade, actually expect a downgrade (DV or not), but Criterion/Disney has piqued my interest.

Maybe this is only happening because the director pushed for it. Also WALL-E is in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry, so that may have played a part. Still, I guess it’s possible if Criterion can crack the Netflix code, they can do the same with Disney. Not that it’s unheard of for Disney to license their lesser catalog (they’ve had deals with Kino, Mill Creek, Anchor Bay, MGM, and also Shout for Gravity Falls), and they’ve licensed to Criterion in the past (Rebecca, Notorious) but a major Pixar title is pretty huge. If anything, it’s nice to see Disney license anything again after the long hiatus.

Maybe Criterion will release the original Star Wars trilogy. LOL

The only problem with speculating future Disney/Pixar/Fox stuff is that Criterion won't be 'cranking' them out. You'd like get 2/3 a year? Unless it becomes 'something' and they make another 'division' (for lack of better term) to work just on just the Disney deal.

3. I'm not upgrading from 4K UHD to a Criterion 4K UHD. That's stupid. The current 4K UHD release is already great. With Sony's new Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 4K UHD release, we're now at the point where "old" 4K UHDs are being upgraded and re-sold. It has to stop somewhere. I can't support this release.
I hear ya.

When I saw Columbia announce their new 10 film set yesterday I was like isn't .. Crouching Tiger .. already on 4k?

And btw, none of those titles in this set are worth owning IMO.

Hey Sony.. can you put out titles that you haven't released yet and stop with all these upgrades with new DV ect...

Where's ..Hard Times... The Last Dragon... Starman... Crossroads ('86).. on 4K?

I may be getting my insiders confused, I thought this one came from the dude who will sometimes announce line ups early.

June of 2023: Tangled!
November of 2023: Frozen!

Whatever.

It'll sell well because Disney, nostalgia, and corporate brand loyalty, but still.

Whatever.

This is a bizarre but welcome announcement. This gives me some hope that Disney made start licensing their shit out to boutique labels and might not just let the Fox stuff rot and die in their vaults

This.

I'm seeing a lot of negativity and whilst I'm no fan of Disney as a company - them being open to licence out films to another company is a huge plus. Now release the Fox!

I guess this is that "unexpected title from an unexpected studio" rumor. The Straight Story next, anybody?
