Definitely didn’t see this coming, but hopefully they'll get the original music for it.

I would assume Mill Creek would at least have to be aware of the demand for I Don't Want to Wait as the theme song. If they were smart, they'd warn us in advance if it was absent like GKIDS/Shout Factory did for Fly Me to the Moon with Neon Genesis Evangelion.

They're willing to sacrifice quality in order to sell units. They're willing to do complete series sets as opposed to individual seasons.

Many 3rd party publishers want to do one season at a time in order to maintain quality control, and bow out of doing the entire series if they don't think sales are high enough.

German dealers like Turbine, cram episodes on discs like Mill Creek, but they seem to take more time efficiently encoding each episode. So they look okay despite low bitrates.

Kino Lorber, to their credit, does commit to doing all seasons of a TV series even though they only do one season at a time. I assume they monitor sales and then adjust how many discs they replicate when they produce the other seasons.

It also comes down to costs.

Mill Creek does outbid many other boutiques for these titles. They are willing to do so to add prestige titles to their library to bolster sales of other titles.

The rights holders do not have to do much aside from providing audio &
video masters, maybe extras if they can be cleared or paid by the boutique. These rights holders do the bare minimum and still get paid by the boutique for the title.

Sometimes the rights holders do bundle offers where a boutique gets a title they may not want. However, it is part of the deal so no on that means no on the ones they do want.

The benefit for rights holders is not just the payment, it keeps titles available on the market that would disappear. The boutique does a majority of the work so lesser titles like Up All Night do not use up aka waste financial resources if they do not sell well.

You can include me on that list. However, not for an inferior format/quality. I hate streaming. I mean absolutely hate it. Netflix has mainly responsible for all this. Won't release any show on 4K disc. Started this bizarre aspect ratio crap that everyone uses now for tv shows. I will always watch a Blu Ray over a 1080p stream. I will always watch a 4K disc over 4K streaming. Especially for 4K if my option for movies I love is pay $25 for each disc or watch a stream for free I'm buying the disc. $40 per tv show season set or watch the stream for free I'll buy it. But Im not going to watch a 1080p disc over a 4K stream except for the rare circumstance that the audio really matters and the disc sounds way better. Streaming audio is usually atrocious. Only 2 I can think of off the top of my head I'll watch the Blu Ray over the 4K stream are The Nice Guys and Spring Breakers.

Are Mill Creek sets usually region free by the way?

I believe their Sony licensed stuff tend to be region free, while releases from Universal are locked. As this is Sony, it is more likely to be region free, but of course, no guarantees.

I really hope that they include English subtitles, and of course that they don't stack the discs.

It’s on HBO Max. That’s a good thing because HBO Max is superior to Netflix!

Yeah, streaming the show in 1080p, not 4K… that’s so superior.

Then go ahead and subscribe to Netflix and watch it there since that service is better! Oh wait, you can’t!

Frankly, it was a bit silly for Netflix to FINALLY offer the series in 4K with the original theme song and then pull from their service shortly thereafter. I mean, what was that about??

But this is my point... everything is being pulled out of Netflix now and they keep increasing their rates as they keep pulling more and more content. Personally, I've never upgraded to their 4K plan because it's not worth it to pay $20 for. At least HBO Max provides 4K content with no additional charge!

I'm so excited for this release, I've been hoping for this for years. The quality on DVD is terrible and I never got a chance to watch the HD version on Netflix before it was removed here in Canada.

I'm actually one of the rare few who likes the Run Like Mad theme song, I find it less cringe than "I Don't Wanna Wait". I also won't care at all if they don't include the original songs in the episodes because I'm used to the replaced music from the DVDs anyway, lol.

It just felt weird for me for it to not be I Don't Wanna Wait because you can't think of one without the other... Like with the final season of Charmed, they didn't have the theme song on BD and it was a replacement instrumental and it just seemed weird, but I didn't mind so much because season 8 felt like a different show almost and at least 1-7 had it. Theme songs are basically all I remember from a show anyway, even recent shows, I 9 times out of 10 won't remember something specific playing in a scene unless they're playing a song within the show and not just the score and the character actually is referencing it playing.

That's fair. I certainly understand why many people are so adamant on having the original theme song and music in it.

All I know is that if they don't include the extended series finale with the Pacey/Andie scene, I will RIOT.

I'm actually surprised to see so many people making a big thing about the theme song. Don't get me wrong; I totally get it and I, myself, enjoy the theme song. But I always felt like I was in the minority. I mean, why else do streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, Disney Plus, etc. have those annoying "skip opening credits" pop-up whenever the theme song is showing?? Am I the only one that enjoys watching the opening credits and doesn't want to skip them??

Looking to get this for my wife as a Christmas present as she loves this show and it'd be a nice upgrade over the DVD....

....or would it? I've heard nothing but bad things about Mill Creek. Didn't they absolutely massacre the The Freshman blu-ray?

Mill Creek can definitely be a mixed bag. They do have some quality releases, but more times than not their poor encoding and compression hurts the quality. Sometimes the picture quality problems are compounded by the masters they're being provided with, which isn't exactly their fault, but the studio licensing out sub-par/dated masters. s. In this case, the masters should be perfectly fine, so if there are issues it would likely be because of compression issues.

Since it comes out early December, it might not hurt to wait until release to see what others are saying. More than likely within the first few days of its release you should know whether it's good or not, and still get it in time for Christmas.

Netflix is overpriced but at least they have a lot of 4K content that dwarfs HBOMax. I still don't understand why a lot of their big tent movies are just at 1080p resolution.
