If one can read German, I can really recommend getting the book Das Caligari Complex by Olaf Brill. It is perhaps the best book published on Caligari since the surviving (but incomplete) script was published back in the 1990s.

Olaf Brill takes a look upon everything that has been written about the film, from contemporary sources to later interviews with key players, and he weighs in on many of the myths surrounding Caligari, disproving several.

It is not hard to read. I haven't read German in 30 years or so, and I still managed to understand it just fine.

Updated with actual BDInfo run. Please ignore the "[incorrectly printed; deleted]" bits - there was a bug in my code that made it re-print another variable's information, so I don't have the correct figures!

I find the difference quite clear to see - the old Blu-ray looks quite obviously low-pass filtered in comparison (well, that's because it was, due to its limited resolution).

Finer grain reproduction is precisely the point here. There is also a smidgen more detail in some shots, e.g., here or here.

I'm sure you could very easily identify the UHD in a blind test.

Sure, but it's a bit like NOTLD: 4K is squeezing out every last morsel the source can offer, and it can't offer much more over and above 2K. Minute refinements, ones that a first time purchaser should not hesitate to buy but for serial upgraders there may be more pressing concerns elsewhere.

I dunno. I’m a mere beer-swigging member of the proletariat, but it was asked if the “spatial resolution” of the 4K would be visibly superior to the 1080p and, to my eyes, it is. I see nothing disingenuous or hyperbolic in David M’s response. Are some improvements from 1080p to 4K nuanced and minor, like this and the aforementioned NotLD? Sure. But improved is improved and I’m delighted Eureka! went all the way down the length of the field for this historic release.

I thought it looked striking when I saw Beaver's caps and decided to pick it up. Now I see the Caps-a-holic ones and can't see much in it beyond fine grain refinement.

I'm confused now and don't know what to do! Maybe the extra goodness is in those 2-bits we can't see in caps?

Are the UHD caps downconverted to 8-bit then? Why would they do that? There's no SDR conversion needed. Though when you've got that grain it's its own ditherer anyway so the difference between 8 and 10 here is minuscule. (David's point re: the bit depth relates more to putting a 10-bit HDR grade on it vs SDR 10-bit, as there's so little here for HDR to exploit you'd be squeezing most of the image into a truncated bit depth vs the code values of 10-bit SDR.)

Never seen this and don't intend to buy it (only to support the format), but I wouldn't buy the German one:

Honestly, no idea. I just assume a 10-bit SDR disc is gonna have some sort of conversion to 8-bits caps. The Beaver caps looked better to me but it’s a different form of comparison and we all know Beaver caps can skew things.

I'm still waiting on the final copy that Laserdisken had of the LE to arrive. They've been slower than molasses in regards to shipping lately so either they're attempting a new personal record or it is lost.
