Torn on this one. Watched the teaser trailer and the little first look thing the other day during the Silent Hill Transmission; been seeing a lot of comments that it looks like a big budget fan film, and I kiiiinda agree? At least in those beginning bathroom/outside scenes, it looks a little too bright and clean? Not sure if it's just the way they shot it or what, but it's missing that grit and grunge that the game had.
I quite liked the first Silent Hill film- I think it's still one of the better video game movie adaptations. You can tell Christophe Gans has a deep love for the series, and I hope it translates into this one as well. His interview in the SH Transmission has me hopeful- he mentioned that all the monsters are still practical and played by dancers. Didn't show them in costume, of course, but there were some really cool shots of the dancers doing some monster-y moves. If this can deliver what that first movie did- sorta B-level cheesy horror with some decent atmosphere, then I'll be happy. I just hope they feature more of the monsters this time around, and not the "greatest hits" version of the first movie, where you only see each one (apart from Pyramid Head) for a single scene. |

For example, in the first game, the opening with the demon babies hunting down the player in the caged area was alarming, with that brilliant horror soundscape playing. In the first movie by Gans, the demon babies which are apparently people in costumes and not CGI, aren't scary at all as they grab for Rahda Mitchell's dress and do no harm at all, then turn to cinders. How is that scary if they can't really hurt her and she just screams? Then we get the Pyramid Head in the 2nd one, but he isn't a threat to the hero at all, and actually helps her. That's not scary. That's reassuring. What was interesting was the scene with the evil guy in the bathroom stall crawling on the floor in the first film, and then in the 2nd, the Spider-Doll lady had some elements of horror, along with the demon attacking on the elevator. I'll wait till they show the new trailer to see it (that twitter link above is gone already). But I'll be surprised if Gans can make this scary. The first two look creepy, but not scary IMO. I think the horror needs more time to build or something. Be more threatening for the main hero. |

Hopefully, some of the chintzier looking footage with get some additional grading, filtering or effects work. Some shots are more in keeping with Silent '06, so we'll see...

I expect this is a much lower budget production than the first film, maybe even in comparison to Revelation, which probably accounts for the cheaper look. I also don't think this has a distributor lined up yet?

I'm sure console generation had something to do with it, but crystal clear digital was never a look of the first games. In fact, there was an option in the menu to turn the film grain off.
I don't know who to blame, the DP or the director. Definitely needs grimed up a bit. |

The least Konami could have done is announce a Silent Hill Master Collection so that we could get the older titles on new systems, but it looks like that's not on the radar. |

The MGS Master Collection is basically just a repackaging of Bluepoint's old HD Collection on the 360/PS3. A Silent Hill equivalent would be based on the SH HD Collection from 2012, which... yeah, I wouldn't want that either. At least there's a good fan patch for SH2 on PC and emulation for SH1, 3&4.
