This is such HUGE news! Hopefully, Disney will get back into the 4K game and release more of their animated classics on the format! Hopefully, this will have a new restoration. Either way, I'll be getting this one for sure!

I wonder how Disney decides what movies will be getting a release? Do they take a look on what's most streamed on Disney+? Or do they follow the Platinum/Diamond/Signature Lines? What sold the most? One does wonder.

Let's adress a few elephants in the room..

First, it's nice to see this release being a thing - there's only a couple of ''classic'' WDAS features on film, probably less than, 6, 5 maybe? But let's not expect this opens the vault for them to start releasing a lot, specially I've already seen a few people throwing out their wishlists here - not gonna happen.

Second, don't expect this 4K to be a magical version with no DNR and fixing all the colour problems the original had. I'm counting on it being the same master as the 2005 DVD and 2012 Blu-ray. I CAN be wrong, as for example, The Sword in the Stone is in 4K HDR/DV, *and has GRAIN* (very soft but it's there!).. but still.

The best we can do is wait and see. Personally I'm happy to see one of these releases because they're super rare, but unless something changes hugely, I wouldn't expect more. I do hope we get some surprises in 4K this year, but we'll see. It's Disney; I remain hugely skeptical. Always.

There is also BBY 4K Steelbook exclusive.

It's a bit late for a normal preorder to go active, but it's not unheard of for Disney's to go live less than 2 weeks pre-release.

EDIT: I did see the odd listing on DMI in the Strange World 4K thread. I hadn't noticed that before and makes it even stranger than DMC doesn't list it as exclusive in any variety. I wonder if this was a very late change in release versions or if something else is going on.
This doesn't look exclusive:

Strange World 4K

Maybe Cinderella 4K will be exclusive for six months or something before a wide release? Or maybe the exclusive is the added DVD?

55 dollars, though? I'm thinking that listing might as well be DMC purchases that the store will sell.

That master was made at a 2K resolution, they have to make a new one. The Sword in the Stone, The Black Cauldron, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Little Mermaid got new transfers, there's no reason to believe this will be any different, Of course it could still come with a new set of issues, but they'll be new ones.

You may be right, but I was under the impression that most of these remasters were done in 4K even at the time just for preservation reasons. Hell, wouldn't you know it, the first Snow White digital restoration was scanned at 4K even back in 1993. Just they weren't able to use it.

They were scanned at 4K resolution, the master was done at 2K resolution. if I remember correctly Cinderella was the first digital master Disney did.

Wasn't Snow White the first, back in 1993? Oh that's the first digital remaster, but it was printed back on film...

Disnee, don't be bastards: if you won't release it abroad (though nothing's confirmed yet) then don't make this a f*cking DMC exclusive which makes it trebly hard - or should I say trebly costly - to import.

It's both, given that you have to pass through a third party because it's a club exclusive, a third party which, for that alone, will charge you double the worth, and then the import fees and shipping.

This has the potential to look great, both The Sword in the Stone and The Black Cauldron are very nice and grainy on Disney+ in their 4K HDR versions. I hope that means Disney are taking a new approach to their classics, and will let the grain stay on this one too.

Someone somewhere could source one, like bluraysforeveryone.com perhaps, so it's still only a few clicks away at my end. It's the cost of doing so that's the #1 factor for me and why I don't do it more often. People on here sometimes offer to buy whatever exclusive version I'm whinging about and send it to me at cost, the sentiment is not unwelcome but as the postage from the US is so high it still makes them prohibitively expensive, like £45+ a go. So even at cost they're still double.

Postage just increased in the US, I checked it just now, and it looks like the cheapest possible rate (1st Class International) for sending a single (not heavy with booklet etc) movie set is now $18.90 (no customs included).

I usually get exclusives from eBay, I don't mind paying more, my issue is that it takes them forever to arrive. Amazon is usually less than two weeks so it's more comfortable to me.

Yeah, shipping from and to the US is a *****. It's around the same for me too. Hence why I decided to grow patient and get an american friend. I buy the movies through him; he keeps them for a while until I'm satisfied then sends them all at once and I pay once for shipping. Only I have to be patient for a while but what I save on shipping for each movie is worth the wait. Given how many movies we're missing here, I gotta get them other ways.

They likely did the restoration in 4K and made a "safety print" based on that, then from the safety print (or the work files from the restoration) made a 2K "transfer" or "scan" for home video release (until 4K became available to the average consumer, they were then likely thinking that was sufficient for home video release, i.e. 4K restoration but for DVD (later BD)).

But same case, perhaps only seemed that way due to the DMC lithograph, and it's getting a general release, so possibly the same case, looks like a club exclusive due to the lithograph (which I don't want anyway).
