Yeah I don't blame you. I think that I know which cable you are referring to.

Its the one where you split the two halves of the drives and its taped to the side holding them together right?

Have you tried looking up sodering?

I recently replaced my 60GB HD with 320GB, but now at least 1 in 3 of my "startups" give me an error message, "Cannot start. The correct hard drive could not be found." This leads me to hold down the PS3 on/off button on the front until it shuts off, before starting up again, at which point, it either starts up fine or gives me that message until repeated attempts eventually start it up fine. Any ideas how to fix or what the problem is?

I recommend taking out your hard drive and firmly, but carefully putting it back in.

That shouldn't cause it to prompt me to reformat or anything, should it? In other words, it shouldn't treat that action as introducing a new hard drive?

It shouldn't prompt you to format it as its already been properly formatted for that machine. However, if that doesn't work, reformating your hard drive will be the next step.

EDIT: Though before I mess with my system, I always do a Backup first.

Yeah its that cable, and I've heard of sodering (from modchips) I just never really knew what it involved. I'll look into though.

If you have never sodered before, then I recommend that you do not try this for your first attempt at it.

Ask around first with other people that have sodered before so you get the right soder and to see if its repairable.

If you couldn't tell, you've basically summed up my soldering experience, lol.

Seriously though, I have done some on circuitboards and the likes, but nothing past High School.

Well those were just the symptoms of the Blu-ray diode failing in the laser. However, it is possible that it would resolve your issue. You have two options to resolve your issue.

1. Paying around $70 and trying to replace it yourself.
2. Contacting Sony (which should be your first step if you are within your 1 year warranty) and paying approx $150.

Hey Marine Mike, I watched your video and it doesnt help me. My problem lies either with the small motherboard thats inside the bluray drive itself, or the connection wire from the drive to the main motherboard. I have checked the connections at both ends and they seem to be fine, but my drive still doesn't spin the discs once they are inside the drive. The discs are seated perfectly and I get the small icon in the corner of the screen, but it doesnt spin. Oh and the eye itself works, because I can hear it and I have seen it do its thing. Please help me.

Jeremy

If the disc isn't spinning make sure your connections to the drive are good.

Is the power plug on the side of the drive firmly plugged in? What about the clip thats on the bottom? If you are confused as to what I"m referring to, its before you take off the enclosure.

and

Also check to make sure that the red/black wire that connects the two halves of the drive (after the enclosure is removed) isn't severed.

Are we talking about the same thing? At this video, go to the 3:09 marker and I point out the black/red wire at this time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJAhl2cb6iU

I remember at one point someone told me that their wire was actually broken and that was giving them issue. Let me know the results and I'll report back to you if I can dig that up.

My drive doesnt have the red/black wire connecting the 2 halves of the drive. There is a red/black wire inside the bottom half of the drive. There is something that is preventing the discs from spinning, everything else on the drive works fine. I have taken this thing completely apart trying to figure it out. If u need more pics of the inside, I will post them for you.

Please do take more pictures and if its possible add more lighting, but not use the flash so theres not too much light if you can.
