I was JUST going to make a thread about how Blu needs to get their packaging act together here's my problems:
1: Please stop using the security latch on the packages (ie: the one on Life of Brian, Reservoir Dogs, Robocop, etc). It's pointless and annoying. It's not stopping anything. Plus it looks bad from the side. 2: Stop putting paper sticker sensors on the inside. If you are like me you like things perfect and these leave behind the most hideous residue ever and don't even full come off without tearing. I understand security concerns, but the sensormatic rectangle ones work just fine and can be removed with little trouble. 3: Keep the Blu-Ray logo on the case embossed (such as on new titles like "Life of Brian"), it looks nicer, it shines and it doesn't chip away like others do. and finally... 4: Stop advertising ON the artwork. I know that's the standard for new formats and whatnot. But it's not tasteful and I like my Blu covers to have 100% artwork, not 2/3rds artwork and 1/3 bluray ads such as "1080p Beyond High Definition" with the metallic swipe or "experience high definition" etc etc) just my two cents |

If you have requests for changes in the packaging, why not post them in the general insiders' thread? After a lot of complaints about the triple security stickers that did nothing to slow down dedicated shoplifters but did a lot to annoy BD fans, most of the studios have listened and gone to a single sticker across the top that is easier to remove without mishap or residue.
Enough agreement from fans on potential changes might lead to actual changes. Some polls on most wanted changes might also help. Chris |

![]() It's just a case. While all things mentioned are excellent points and I usually am thinking the same thing when opening my movie up, in the end all that really matters is the product inside. ![]() |

THE DISney swoosh artwork sucked, but other than that I haven't had problems with the cases.
I dont like the case with the snap clip on the side. I like the one with the raised blu-ray logo. Not the ugly gray printed one. |

It's the same with Blu Rays and DVDs in my opinion. If I don't like the packaging, the desire to own the film is not there for me... Last edited by oetty; 02-10-2008 at 01:16 PM. |

But that is a bad metaphor. A BD in an ugly case is a beautiful woman in an ugly dress. The movie with its great sound and image is the woman, the case is just the clothing. You can get different cases/clothing for the disc, but the disc doesn't change.
So, what you are saying is that it is smart to pass on a beautiful woman who's looks and qualities are no different no matter what she wears because you don't like the clothing. Makes absolutely zero sense. Instead, you go for the much less attractive, much less appealing woman, the DVD, because she has better fashion sense. You can't pretty up the DVD image and sound, but you can choose to replace the BD case if you so desire and the BD remains the superior version that it is while the DVD remains the inferior version that it is as well. Put it another way. You are telling people they should buy cheap sparkling white wine because the bottle is more attractive, when they could have a vintage champagne in a less attractive bottle. No matter which way you twist and turn the idea, it is still sticking with the inferior product because you don't like the packaging. I hated a lot of the different forms DVD packaging took, most particularly cardboard packaging. But if someone suggested I buy an inferior version of a movie on DVD because I liked the packaging form more instead of the ultimate edition director's cut with tons of extras in a package I hate. I can replace the box and put it away in case I ever want to sell the movie, but I can't add those features to the bare bones release that comes in the package I like. No matter how you look at it, it still comes out sounding like cutting your nose off to spite your face. Like I said before, screwing yourself by wasting money on DVD editions when BD editions are available makes no sense. The studios have no idea why you pass on the movies, they don't even notice your lack of buying. If you haven't noticed, even those who agree with you on disliking the packaging think you are nuts to pass on the movies, so there is not any evidence that the packaging is costing them enough sales to even blip on their radar. The smart thing to do is to buy the BDs you like, look for alternate packaging you can buy for cheap in bulk to make your shelves look uniform since that is important to you, and make your feelings known on the insiders' thread where actual insiders might note your complaints and you might accomplish something other than keeping yourself awash in inferior releases in pretty little boxes. Aside from my complaints, I do LOVE the color, size and shape of the cases. They look great on my shelf.
And of COURSE it's all about the movie itself, but when you're spending nearly $30-40+ per movie those little things can get annoying ESPC with the lack of booklets and extras. Also, I'm a collector by nature, some of you may not be, thats fine, watch the movie. But for me, the reason I BUY a physical product and choose not to rent HD movies is to have the item in my hands. And if you're a collector, like me, you like things neat and kept well. (maybe this attitude stems from collecting baseball cards as a kid, then vinyl later on?) |
